The original. Directed by Harold Ramis. Story by John Hughes. Chevy Chase, literally, at his cinematic best, perfectly balancing all the qualities we love about Clark Griswold.

    Ramis set the tone.

National Lampoon's Vacation isn't just "the best" of the series... it's Top 10 comedies of all time for me.

Not just for laughs - I mean, it feels good. So glad that film was made. All essential ingredients created the magic.

FYI, Vegas was not a National Lampoon production, so we're really talking 3 films.

Christmas for me, may be my all time favorite movie. But I have a special place for Vacation and European, too.

They all have their own charms and feel about them that make them all enjoyable. The first one is a summer vacation tradition with "Holiday Road" being a family favorite for the ride to our vacation destination. Christmas Vacation is a holiday tradition for my family. Vegas Vacation and European Vacation are also a riot and they both provided plenty of inside jokes. To me it's not a better or worse or favorite or less favorite. There's a place for all of them.

None of them. I like the original John Hughes short story Vacation '58 on which the first Chevy Chase movie was based. That was about a family in 1958 trying desperately to drive to Disneyland in Anaheim, and it was about 1000 times more outrageous and funnier than the movie.

    The opening line is classic:

If Dad hadn’t shot Walt Disney in the leg, it would have been our best vacation ever!

Absolutely hilarious story, plus it had the added impact of being a nostalgic tale taking place in the idyllic 1950s. They ruined it by making it contemporary.

P.J. O'Rourke wrote up an essay I enjoyed - and of course, "Vacation '58" is mentioned... it's about the fall (rise) and fall of "National Lampoon" (he was Editor In Chief in the late 70s)

He's not pleased with the reboot, but he does share my passion for the original film. (Very nice pic of Ramis and Radner from '74 I'd never seen before included!)
