I never got into laserdiscs but remember going to the local CD store and seeing them along the walls. I also remember seeing Terminator 2 in a store as a demo on laserdisc and remembering how much better it looked compared to the VHS tape I had at home.

When you make $30 million a movie you should just hire someone to stand in the back corner of the room so they can come and flip the laserdisc or LP over so you don't have to get up.

Tom Cruise seems like an OCD guy, so yeah, vinyl.

I posted this earlier but when he talks about his gear in his NYC apartment I could relate. I installed that gear for him.

I'm sure Cruise has a self-flipping laserdisc player. They're pretty common.

Ah, but he would still need to hire a disc switcher for those multi-disc movies.

Pioneer made a dual-tray player, but it never really caught on. He'd still be SOL on those 3-disc CAV sets. :)

Well he's moved, but in the LA house I worked in there was a full blown SOTA theater. It had laser disc and later DVD that went to a pretty expensive video projector, but there was also several film projectors.

The thing is he couldn't work those, and I don't think he was allowed to due to union regulations. What he did have was 20 minute access to a projectionist who could come over, bring the movies and run the projectors. Apparently this was fairly common for LA area industry people and a cottage industry.

I never saw a film there, but did install and maintain the satellite systems that routed through the a/v system that fed that video projector.

Sorry to bump an old topic, but a related anecdote: I listen to the Adam Carolla podcast and he's mentioned that not only does he have problems getting his theater setup to function, but he has some high end friends like Jay Leno who have similar problems. He says that when these guys have a party or have folks over to watch a movie, they always invite the installer so there's someone there who can make it work. I guess the incentive being that the installer gets to meet other high rollers who might be inclined to to some business with him in the future.

This has also been the case for me. I've been invited to parties of the OC rich and famous just because of the work I've done. I remember once sitting around a firepit with all these guys that owned their own planes talking about the issues they had with them and thinking, what the heck am I doing here.

I was once hired to go to a party, mainly so the hosts could show me off because they had discovered my audio knowledge. It was totally embarrassing and I was against it, but ultimately I just looked at it as another job. Btw, this wasn't some rich socialite client, but a studio owner.

That deck came out in the 80's. I wanted one. They didn't catch on because they wanted $1500 for 'em!
