Actually, I don't think audiences tired of Mickey - it was the Disney people who got tired of him. IIRC, the writers/animators grew to loathe doing MM shorts because there was so little they could do with the character. He couldn't be anything other than a cheerful, nice guy - where's the comedy/tension in that?

So I think MM cartoons were "phased out" because Disney staff didn't want to make them more than because audiences didn't want to see them...

I'm surprised there haven't been more new Mickey shorts or even a new feature film featuring him and the gang. I know they've done some TV shows for kids on The Disney Channel that have been really popular and well-revived.

I think it still goes back to the character's inherent blandness. In the 1930s, audiences loved MM so much that he turned from a semi-interesting character to a neutered one - audiences didn't want to see MM act in any way other than as cheerful and pleasant, so the writers had nothing to do with him.

80 years later, they STILL have nothing to do with him!

I wonder if Bugs and Mickey shop for white gloves at the same store?

It's not that I dislike Mickey, I just like Bugs more.

I know why Bugs is getting all the votes- he did a Beatles tribute album!

    I think it's simple.

Bugs was made for kids with adult humor added. Mickey is purely for kids.

I might even argue that Bugs wasn't made for kids at all. At least not much of the dialogue.

Mickey wasn't really made for kids either in so much as he was made for general audiences which often meant just adults.

Those early Looney Tunes were defiantly geared towards adults, yeah... but they too evolved and changed over the years.

Again, that's not the way the character started. Disney "dulled down" MM due to his popularity - audiences simply wouldn't accept a Mickey who acted as anything other than good and pure.

Not saying he was a raucous barrel of laughs in the earlier days, but he had more personality and could even be a bit of a prick at times...

Yup. I don't think modern audiences understand how popular Mickey was in the 1930s, and it wasn't just kids...

Exactly. When kids go to Disney World/Disney Land, they all want to track down Mickey to have their photos taken with him.

But Bugs Bunny is so damn funny (to both kids and adults.)

For cuteness, Mickey by a mile, but for pure laughter, Bugs by a mile.

Bugs for me, no contest, but I will put in a plug for visiting this place if you are in the San Francisco area:

My wife is a Disney "nut," and I am merely a casual fan, but we were at the museum for five hours and, had we not had a Paul McCartney concert to get to, could have easily stayed much longer. It's a fantastically interesting exhibition.

That'd be an interesting poll - and almost certainly closer than this one!

Right now I'm not sure which I'd choose...

Daffy is more slapstick than Donald. Also, while both Daffy and Donald both get the short end of a stick, Daffy seems to get it rougher than Donald. Donald's end is just sadder and less deserving than Daffy's, all due to being the butts of a joke.
