As many times as I had seen this, and the others in the series in cutout bins, I never bothered to buy one. never heard any of them, either.

Oh, you need "Back to Basics" - if only for "Sail Away" and the cool remix of "Isn't the Night Fantastic". Both are great songs. "Isn't..." really is a remix in the truest sense of the word. It's a bit elongated with different bass line but it really is actually remixed, not in the way things are today. I think they were trying to prep it for a single release, though I see no record of it being a single. I know the original made the B-side of a few of them. The original (on "Power") is the better of the two but the remix is interesting. "Sail Away" is just a gorgeous ballad with Ron on it. This album is the one where they worked with Norman again and the results are really very good. Highly recommended!

I already have both songs on the "Emperors Of Soul" CD boxed set.

Oh yeah. I forgot the box has them both. Still, it lacks the remix of "Isn't the Night Fantastic". The bass work is great on it. You need it. LOL! The duel between the Four Tops and the Tempts is also stellar.

I bought this album right after finding $50 by a store. I was so stoked to own all of those hits I grew up with...until I realized that they were the stereo mixes instead of the mono singles I knew.

Yep. Same uncomfortable discovery here. LOL! It's still a great package, hence the reason I didn't make it go away...LOL!

I have no connection to this album. Never even heard it, and probably don't want to, but I am saving it because it's such a pretty cover.

It isn't very good. You don't need it. I grabbed it because it was cheap and because of the jacket design. The tunes aren't good.

My vinyl copy sounded atrocious. It was nice to have Ali-Ollie back and aside from "Special" and maybe "Soul to Soul" there's nothing I need to hear again, it was dated by 1991, ha.

Mine is nothing to write home about either...LOL!!

Yep. They were barreling down the road of Boyz II Men by this point and their identity was about to be completely stripped away - a condition they only awoke from on "Still Here". After "Special", they started making albums that didn't sound the least bit like the Temptations. Instead of getting good albums, we got the occasional good tune plus filler. Every album from this point forward, I can take or leave. Those albums need a serious single-disc distillation.

Oddly, Motown knew who to hire to get the covers done. All of the covers that follow this one look distinctive - although none are available on vinyl.

Yep, they always did good covers. I don't like many of the albums after this, it's a shame. Totally agree about the compilation, that would be cool.

IMO, they stopped sounding line The Temptations in the early 80s.

I get that. To me, they still sounded like the Tempts through "Together Again". After that, they lost their way and didn't find it until "Still Here". Even then, they were so far adrift that they could only get part of the way back. The tunes were still pretty weak but they did at least sound like themselves again.

Minor fix on "Together Again" just performed. Missed it somehow last night.
