J.J. Cale is definitely one of the pioneers of this genre and somehow managed a #22 hit with Crazy Mama.

Today's acquisitions, mostly thank$ to this thread:

    Alan Jackson-Angels and Alcohol
Warren Haynes-Ashes and Dust (really looking forward to this)
Sturgill Simpson-High Top Mountain & Metamodern Sounds In Country Music
Jason Isbell-Something More Than Free & Southeastern

I'm going to visit family in a few weeks, and I have a couple of country radio-loving ladies in my family who need an education. I'll make sure these are in my iPod before I go, along with The Civil Wars, Alison Krauss, Joe Ely, and Gram Parsons who are all already there.

Has anyone here heard a band called Last Train Home? They are out of the Maryland/D.C. area-the main man is a guy named Eric Brace. I've only heard them do one song-a slowed-down, beautiful version of So Long, Baby, Goodbye which is normally a rockabilly tune. Minimal YouTube presence. They fit here.

The Rave-Ups' "Radio" from 1985's 'Town & Country' album:

Frontman Jimmer Podrasky is back in action with last year's "The Would Be Plans" (with members of Dwight Yoakam's touring band) and a new album being recorded now. Here he is last fall doing an excellent Dylan cover, backed by The Clarks:

Perhaps it would be considered Canadiana, but: Frazey Ford--"Done" (or about anything Frazey, the Tanyas and/or Birds of Chicago have done.
