This is the one thing that I discovered about him later and when he was in I'm A Celebrity, I wanted him to win - he came across really well he showed he didn't take things too seriously and wasn't a bighead like people made him out to be. Cheesy yes, but that's part of the act if you like. :) Other Radio One DJs are reputed to not know about or even like music to any degree. That's not the case at all with him.

Tony Blackburn was a huge Motown fan from day one as a DJ, I remember he played it constantly.

Given what we now know about some of the 70's DJ's unsavoury habits I will take cheesy any day.

It was a little before I was born but there's another thing that makes him pretty cool in my book - playing The Move (one of the very best 60s bands, IMO) as the first ever thing on the brand new R1.

But this is in danger of going a bit retro now. :shh:

From the first chart, I've got over 30 of the albums. Sad to see all the Jim Croce albums there.

That's not exactly a wonderful top 100 above. If it weren't for Waterloo and Can't Get Enough of Your Love, there would be nothing I'd really care if I never heard it again. There are about a dozen I like in a lukewarm sort of way, things like You Make Me Feel Brand New, Sugar Baby Love, Please Come to Boston, The Air That I Breathe ...

Both Appetite For Destruction and Hysteria were released the summer of 87, but they didn't hit number one in the US until the next summer. They are both examples of albums that did in fact climb the charts.

While the charts weren't 100%, we had Cashbox and Music Vendor/Record World for comparison to Billboard. The three taken together provided a more accurate picture than any one of them alone.

That looks to me like it is from Feb or March of 74.
It is the perfect example of how top 40 charts included the best of various styles of music.

This chart shows how different the UK and U.S. charts could be. I reckon at least 8 of the top 20 either didn't chart at all, or were minor hits at best in the UK.

    Steely Dan
Righteous Brothers (never heard this in my life!)
    Dave Loggins
    Chicago
    Blue Magic
    Jim Stafford
    Wet Willie
    Bachman Turner Overdrive

These are the ones I struggle to recall. Then again, I suppose the U.S. weren't familiar with records by acts like Mud, the Wombles, the Glitterband and Peters & Lee that were high on the charts here.:D

    My collection features #1- 13, 16, 18 - 21, 23 - 25, 27 - 29, 31, 34, 38, 39, 43, 49 - 51, 55, 58 - 60, 65, 66, 68, 72, 80, 91, 93 and 100. 44 of the songs in this chart.

I've much preferred Cat Stevens' rendition of "Another Saturday Night" to Sam Cooke's, speaking of songs that debuted on the Hot 100 that week.

Post #445 (5 Mar 77): Dancing Queen and Hard Luck Woman stand out. Year of the Cat is no slouch either, title track off one of the year's best LPs. I can tolerate all of the following without being wildly enthusiastic: Weekend in New England, Go Your Own Way, Maybe I'm Amazed, Blinded by the Light, Don't Give Up On Us, Living Next Door to Alice, Don't Leave Me This Way, Carry On Wayward Son.

Post #446 (9 Aug 75, 40 years ago today): Send in the Clowns is the outstanding track here. Others I more or less like approximately in descending order: One of These Nights, Someone Saved My Life Tonight, I'm Not in Love, Could It Be Magic (which I'm listening to to refresh my memory; nice piano, above all), Get Down Tonight, The Hustle.

Wow, this is the first time I actually have everything on the chart listing. Note* Paul Williams won an Academy Award for writing the hit Streisand song listed above. He also seemed to be making appearances on about every other hit US television show of the 70s.

I have every song listed above except I only have a live version of the Amazing Rhythm Aces tune. The Dwight Twilley tune at #16 is my favorite of this bunch. Still get a big kick out of it when it comes on the radio.
