As far as I know jazz violinist Venuti only played the violin, not the viola. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viola
That's not what I meant - I don't think there are any recordings with Venuti playing the viola. On everything I have with Venuti he's playing the violin. Never mind.
Bobby "Blue" Bland / The Anthology Great collection of tracks, the man had the rawest set of pipes on earth.
I have not been listening to any blues music, lately. My living circumstances have made that I have the blues, more than enough, all by myself.
Marmot, that's pretty hot. I like! Thanks for sharing that. How is the rest of the album? I think I saw you post it in the "What Are you Listening To.." thread.
I'm listening to Born To Play Guitar by Buddy Guy on Beats Music as I type this. I pre-ordered the vinyl.
"Never Leave My Homework Undone" b/w "Giving Me A Hard Time," by Little Mack Simmons. On the Dud Sound label. I don't know if either side of this 45 has been reissued on CD, but it's fairly easy to find in Chicago, where the A-side was a local hit in 1972. Simmons was a singer/harp player who could have made it to the big leagues ala James Cotton or Junior Wells, but it wasn't to be. To prove his versatility, he recorded harmonica versions of such popular hits as "Rainy Night In Georgia," "Boogie On Reggae Woman" and (that's right, people) "Thriller." As you can hear for yourself, "Giving Me A Hard Time" (with its' out-of-tune horns) is funky like a dog. And the top deck? It sizzles! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FzR8i9NapM
Me too, I actually just learned about it from a small article in RS magazine. I don't feel he has reached his full potential yet in the studio, but his live album is stupendous!!
Otis Rush early stuff on Cobra, Blind Willie Johnson, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers - Live In 1967 and some Robert Johnson.
I like the whole album, quite a bit. It's been getting as much play as the new Jason Isbell, along with a few other things.
