Great news. Trying to steal a little of Sony's thunder, I guess, with the timing.

Much more interesting to me than who owns or has released what or what's missing is how the big old swath of stuff that's about to drop sounds. Hope this is done lovingly and not jacked-upedly.

He's probably gonna cancel the Sony deal out of spite. Big time operators!

My guess is that it's the existing/latest masterings. I hope I'm wrong.

There is some material in the collection that has never been remastered,
and according to Discogs, these albums didn't get a 2008 re-release:

    St. Dominic's Preview
    Hard Nose the Highway,
    A Period of Transition,
    Beautiful Vision,
    Poetic Champions Compose,
    Hymns to the Silence,
    Too Long in Exile,
    Days Like This
    Magic Time

I'm thinking there would be quite a bit of work on the catalog to get these digital versions prepared,
especially with the talk of deluxe editions and compilations. Fingers and toes crossed for a good job.

Just a handful of extras. Will be listening and likely buying though.

Giving the project to Vic Anesini would cause me to possibly re-purchase everything. Reissuing existing masters would only cause me to fill in gaps in the collection.

Well, where are the Astral Weeks outtakes? At least "I've Been Working" and "Going Around with Jesse James", an early version of "Crazy Face" were cut outside of the songs on the album.

Van's 'Been Working' a long time then! AW, Moondance, and finally Street Band! :)

Not to mention the famous reinvention of his early classics "Ring Worm" and "Blow in Your Nose" as spacey epics during the Astral Weeks sessions.

Same here, especially with the rising popularity of hi-res music. Remastering all of these in hi-res just makes sense. Of course, not everything that makes sense is done...

Assuming Van is in charge, it will likely be Ian Cooper and Tim Young. They've done all his cd mastering since the mid 80s AFAIK, so he must like them. They used to do good work. . . (I assume Warners used someone else on the Moondance reissue just to piss him off :))

    .

    Me too.

I really don't have any gaps, but I don't find any of the ones I have to be "bad"

Letting his catalogue go out of print might be Van's best career move ever. Look at the buzz.

When these are available as CDs, don't waste any time before buying them. On past history, they may be gone just as quickly. Looking forward to this - the Moondance 2CD deluxe was very well done.
Fortunately, I snapped up Astral Weeks live.

    Yup!

You had me curious, so I just pulled the liner notes out. Elliot Scheiner and I agree with John, he did a great job on Moondance.

Except that mastering a compilation from a variety of labels/sources doesn't point to an entire catalog remaster.

Remember, UMe used the Rhino masterings for their reboot.

I thought I had somehow clicked on the Elvis Costello reissue thread and was going to tell you that was a false statement.

    So much reissueness.
