This is NOT meant to be a sarcastic response -----

In their circle yes. Outside their circle of appreciation No.

To me they seem to be forgotten or not included with some of the greats too often

    Great info.

Why the hassle on the rights issue?

For me they're the best band out of Britain ever. And Ray Davies the greatest songwriter.

    So no...they don't.

Well, I'm just going by an acquaintance of mine who runs a small CD label that issues rare material by UK 60s acts, many of whom were comparably as big as the Kinks in their heyday.. he told me he wouldn't counterance a Kinks release as the rights issues would be too problematic. I could imagine the Shout Factory folk may take the same line. But I'm just speculating really, I don't have any great insider insight.

Kinks to me are one of the greatest, if not the greatest, rock band of all time. A lot of people, especially in the U.S., didn't get Ray's campy sense of humor, and his thoughtful commentaries on everyday (mostly British) life went over the heads of many, again, especially Americans. Also, the disconnect between the original run of greatness and the 79-83 arena-rock resurgence didn't help matters. I recall meeting an old friend in 1980 when One For the Road was to me an outstanding new piece of entertainments. "The Kinks are gay," my friend said flatly. "Wait, what?" I sputtered "Just listen to Lola. And what's with that that 'way-o' bulls*it." Out of context, the whole Kinks thing seemed to many to be something it was not.

I agree. And I've heard other people say the Kinks are gay. Bottom line, either you get 'em or you don't. But the ones that do are EXTREME Kinks fans. Totally in a class of our own.

Well, anyone who thinks that should know that Ray "tried to be gay, but it didn't pay, so he bought a motorbike instead." ... ;)

Dave only wrote the one; it's unsurprisingly called Kink. And it clearly admits that he took speed hand over fist from the early days up to the mid-70s.

The Kinks did enough from 1964-71 to be considered one of the greats. I'm not a fan at all of their late 70s-early 80s "arena rock" phase, although that was when I first heard of them. The live version of "Lola" received quite a bit of radio airplay on AOR stations then.

Oh really! I'm sure that didn't fuel any arguments in the band! Thanks for the info.

I can't take it. I just listened to Something Better Beginning and Powerman by the Kinks. They are just too damn incredible

Oh my god you have no idea. MANY people will say they like the kinks better than the stones or Beatles. That's because they're so endearing. Songs about everyday life, put forth so eloquently, yet down to earth.

This is the honest to god truth. I'll go on a Kinks spree, 2&3 days (not 24 hours). And it literally hurts. Their songs are so very evocative.

I think I've said something similar, but both comments are probably true.

According to the RIAA, they have 4 gold albums in the USA. Two million albums sold, I will never understand why their sales are so low. And I do not know anybody that liked them like I do.
