Have to put in a word for Duffy's 'Rockferry' album too. Huge in the UK with a string of hit singles. Including the one she's most famous for, 'Mercy'. I've never known such a spectacular fall from grace.

All Right Now - Free - They had great albums before and after but they'll always be known for this one song......unless you are a fan as I am.

Has there ever been an album with more singles than Def Leppard - Hysteria?

Fleetwood Mac with Rumours. The band still promote it in every interview, to the detriment of any other music under the name Fleetwood Mac. Excuse me while I put on the snob hat and advance the theory that the continued fascination with this era and line-up is partly due to all the soccer moms and dads who salivate at the thought of cocaine-induced partner-switching.

I came here specifically to post this as my example. I'm listening to it right now!

"Business.." was one of the best Pop albums of the 80s, a great album start to finish with no "filler" tracks. It definitely has a "summer" vibe.

Although slightly less successful commercially, I'd say "Cargo" is almost as good. Colin Hay's solo albums are also worth listening to, more "mature" but still charmingly quirky (great sense of humor).

The perfect example and hard to imagine anything topping it. And, yes, I've even gone to one of the restaurants.

I'd say Dexys Midnight Runners. Although I do remember someone posting awhile back that they had many subsequent hits in the UK, I'm pretty sure most of the world knows them for Come On Eileen, and out.

Broadcast by Cutting Crew produced two Top 10 hits in the U.S. including "(I Just) Died in Your Arms" which went to #1. They pretty much fell off the map after that.

  19. I wonder if Rew has ever lit a cigar with a £100 note in front of Robyn Hitchcock. :)

Dexy's had two big albums and numerous hit singles. Unfortunately Come On Eileen became an 80's version of Hi Ho Silver Lining.

  21. "We Will Rock You" was certainly a very popular song and a feature at many sporting events but it's not Queen's biggest seller (that was "Another One Bites The Dust") and Queen absolutely does not qualify as "artists who weren't really known for much else but one well known song or album" as specified by the OP.

I dunno. Right Said Fred? I'm too sexy.

  25. Anyway. I'll suggest "Groove Is In the Heart" by dance combo Dee-Lite. That song was everywhere in the early '90s, but all their other releases stiffed and after about 1993 or so the group couldn't get arrested outside a dance club. The song is still a staple of '90s retro nights and pops up in commercials from time to time.
