This is really sad. The first Craven film I saw was Deadly Blessing in 1981, he provided a lot of entertainment through the years. R.I.P.

Terrible news. Freddy was everything to me growing up in the 80's. He'll be missed.

Craven was able to create two seminal horror franchises. I might even argue "Scream" was "more important" than "Nightmare". Sure, the latter had the more famous character, but "Scream" was a remarkably influential film - more than "Nightmare", IMO...

I just heard the news. Now I feel awful. I love his work. He was a true innovator of the horror genre. He will be deeply missed.

He was such an interesting director. His horror films had quite thoughtful themes and ideas.

In 1984, he also directed a TV movie called Invitation to Hell starring Robert Urich and Susan Lucci (in full camp mode). Disguised as a horror movie, it's really about the rise of yuppie culture.

He made some great flicks. One of the originators.

  16. And no matter how much it sucked, it can't be denied that Last House On the Left was a seminal modern horror film.

Anyway. Yeah, this is quite a shock.

After Last House, Craven made a conscious effort to not make another picture as bleak and nihilistic. It still packs a punch all these years later, thanks in no small part to David Hess' intense performance.

I never got into the Nightmare series (liked part II best), but I did really like the original The Hills Have Eyes, The Serpent And The Rainbow, Swamp Thing and the underrated Cursed (2005).

The Hills Have Eyes (1977) is pretty bleak.

And it would likely have been three - if Craven had been successful with Horace Pinker from Shocker (which was a deliberate attempt to create another Krueger-esque property, this time for Carolco).

Although it's easy to emphasise Craven's misses (Deadly Friend, Shocker, Vampire in Brooklyn, etc.), he really was a filmmaker who took legitimate risks in order to challenge his audience. Ghostface and Krueger will be his popular legacy, but he never created a more disturbing character than Krug from the original Last House on the Left - which, despite its sometimes glaring faults, remains a harrowing and truly disturbing film. On the flip side, he also gave horror cinema one of its strongest and most interesting characters - Nancy Thompson.

    RIP, Mr. Craven. :(

Yeah, I just saw "Shocker" for the first time a few weeks back - it's due on Blu-ray next week. Definitely an attempt to launch a new franchise...
