Why do some source components have a headphone out and no volume control for it (or, at least, not a clearly labelled control on the front panel)?

Because good volume controls = expensive.

My OPPO BDP-105 controls this via the remote, though a knob would be nice.....

Thanks for the replies. I ask because I was using some components in a library recently and thought I'd try the CD player's headphone jack. It was much louder than I wanted. I just don't see the sense of including one and not giving the listener volume control.

Probably had one via the (missing?) remote control.

Good point about a remote control.

I always plug headphones into the amp, so it was no big deal to me beyond one of those "but why" moments.
