I haven't heard anyone else use "poly-vinyl-chloride" or "Perestroika" or "Mujahideen" in a song, either.

every year the senior class at the high school i teach at asks the faculty for a quote.

last year i used "enjoy every sandwich".

i have 3 more years left before i retire and i think i will use that same quote for the rest of the way. the seniors loved it, and many said it to me at graduation.

if there is anyone who should be in the rock and roll hall of fame it is warren zevon....i find it a travesty that he rarely, if ever, even mentioned when it is being discussed.

The song I pull out frequently is Worrier King from the live album Learning To Flinch. I never hear anybody talk about this song but it blows me away. The guitar sound is so bright! If it's a 12-string (and I think it is but I'm not sure) I've never heard anybody use a slide on one like he does here. Great effect.

Long time Warren fan here - had the s/t a few months after it came out and bought everything when it came out. Managed to see him just the once in 1983 at Hammersmith Odeon. Solo gig IIRC.

I'm assuming people know about the 100+ shows that can be found on the (legal) Live Music Archive site? Just in case here's the link...

Digging around my old copies of Zigzag I've found a couple of articles from late 1976 about WZ which I thought might interest fans of the man. First is 3 pages from ZZ65, Oct 76

thanks, that fills in a lot of the early years. Would love to see the sequels, if you have them.

  13. I'll throw in with you guys on this one - vastly under-appreciated and overall, I think his best. "Let Nothing Come Between Us" is wonderful, and love the typically self-deprecating dark humor of "The Hula-Hula Boys"...

From warrenzevon.org, a list of covers of Zevon songs; sprry it didn't cop perfectly, but the format is Title-Album-Artist.

This list does not include anybody including their version of Werewolves Of London on a Hallowe'en Compilation, any mention of Kid Rock's use of WOL in "All Summer Long" or any and all Karaoke versions of Zevon songs. Also, it does not include the performances already listed in the two Tribute Albums, "Enjoy Every Sandwich" and "Hurry Home Early."

one of the only threads I've ever started on this forum asked the question: Is The Envoy Zevon's best album? My thought being, overall, yes.

it got a good, respectful response... wonder if that would be true today.

When you’re starting out as a songwriter, it helps to learn from the best. Fortunately for Phil Cody, he was taken under the wing of the great Warren Zevon when the two toured together in the 1990s. Therefore, when Cody decided to return to making music after taking a lengthy spell off to raise a family, it makes sense that he turned to his old friend for inspiration. Phil Cody returns today with Cody Sings Zevon, twelve songs from the impressive and extensive Zevon catalog as interpreted by a man who knew him well.

First off, I am a huge WZ fan and have been ever since the day back in 1978 when a friend played me the album Excitable Boy for the first time.

It so impressed me that when side 2 ended, I insisted that my friend play the entire album over again from the start.

The next day, I owned my own copy of Excitable Boy and Warren Zevon. And I've never looked back .

I own everything official that his labels have released ( and a few that aren't ).

He is without a doubt one of my all-time favorite musical artists.

I don't know how I missed this thread originally, but just had to weigh in after I decided to play Stand In The Fire this morning. It has inspired me to make this one a Warren Zevon day. I just put on Learning To Flinch and will just taken it from there randomly . There is no bad choice after all...:)

    Enjoy every sandwich ...

I'm currently writing a caper/ social satire film where the two main characters- a young 20something political activist/burglar and a 40ish recently divorced guy bond over their love of Zevon. He's my favorite singer/songwriter. A genius!

I am kinda curious on what Zevon album(s) I should pick up next. Right now I own: Warren Zevon, Excitable Boy, Bad Luck Streak In Dancing School, The Envoy, The Wind, the expanded version of Stand In The Fire and expanded/remastered Sentimental Hygiene. I also have the Genius comp. Is Transverse City the best one to pick up next? I checked on Amazon and seen it is going for 20 dollars, and I don't think it is a remastered version. I know he only put out 5 or 6 studio albums that I don't have, but I just found out that WZ, EB and Bad Luck... all have expanded versions, some are two disc sets and they are going for 20 dollars or more each, so I guess I'm curious as to which albums are worth picking up right now before I pick up those remasters.

I'm sure I'll eventually get all his studio albums, but are there any that you guys feel I should pick up now? I've been reading I'll Sleep When I'm Dead: The Dirty Life and Times of Warren Zevon, haven't had a lot of time to read it but so far it is very interesting. I'm up to the part where Zevon is putting together the band for the Everly Brothers road band. I love the story Waddy Wachtel tells about how they first met and were kinda feeling each other out, and neither seemed to think to much of the other, and Zevon says something like "okay wise guy, what tune is this?" and plays a classical number. Wachtel said he didn't know anything about classical music, but happened to have one classical album, and by chance that album had the tune Zevon played, "Beethoven's Fourth In G". So Wachtel told him it was "Beethoven's Fourth", ******* and walked out the door. He said he didn't tell Zevon until about 10 years later that if he had played any other classical piece he wouldn't have had a clue what song it was.

Simple - Life'll Kill Ya. Along with s/t and Excitable Boy, his best work. There's also a brilliant live album, Learning To Flinch. I think the version of "The French Inhaler" on that album is my favourite WZ track.

Thanks for the suggestion, I seen Amazon had Life'll Kill Ya for under ten dollars so I ordered it. Can't wait to listen to it, will be purchasing Learning To Flinch soon as well. Thanks again for the help. I was able to read a decent chunk of I'll Sleep When I'm Dead last night, I'm up to the part where Crystal has returned to Aspen and Warren is about to come visit. I really enjoyed reading his letters to Crystal, it really kinda humanized him for me, just a regular guy in love. Up to that point he had been portrayed as such a tough guy, not showing his emotions. Loved the picture of the check Crystal sent Warren for a plane ticket, Warren didn't accept it of course but he changed it from $100 to $100,000, and had some amusing writing on it as well. Man I can't believe he made it as long as he did between all the stories of his drink/drug intake, and I'm still early in the book!

I don't know how to do a shout out, or whatever it is when it shows a user's name here, but I want to thank Roger Thornhill for posting all these fantastic articles, some really great reading as Jackson Browne is one of my favorite muscians, so very cool of you to do that.

I just listened to the 2007 remastered & expanded version of Excitable Boy, and am still blown away by how great the remaster sounds. I ordered a copy of The Envoy 2007 remaster, which should arrive Friday. But I'm curious if anyone knows why Bad Luck Streak In Dancing School wasn't included in those 2007 remasters. It appears it is the only one of his Asylum albums to not get the treatment, I know it was remastered a few years ago but I'm talking about the 2007 Rhino remasters.

It isn't a bad sounding album, but would have loved to have heard what it could have sounded like. I don't think there were any legal issues that would have held the album back.
