Love both, but side one of TAAB takes the prize

  2. Thick As A Brick, easily. I'd even rank Benefit, Stand Up and Songs From The Wood ahead of Aqualung as well. All great albums though.

Started with Thick as a Brick. I never grow tired of TaaB. I've had enough of Aqualung's title track for now.

I can remember a day or two when it didn't get played, but there were many other days that it
received multiple plays. I can pretty much play the LP note for note on several instruments......

At this point in time, Aqualung easily. I actually just listened to TaaB yesterday and the music is good, but I have a hard time paying attention to the lyrics and find myself zoning out a lot. IMO would've been better to condense it to a side long epic instead of a full album length track. I'll definitely give it a few more listens though.

I never really understood how "prog" Aqualung was. It's more hard rock with folk rock leanings, at least that's how it sounds to me. TAAB and Passion Play are more true prog, but that's just me. I'd appreciate some opinions on this.

Aqualung. I like parts of Thick as a Brick but I generally prefer albums made up of individual songs rather than one continuous piece.

But I'll take Benefit and Stand Up over Aqualung.

I like both, but I'd choose Aqualung even though some of the tracks are majorly burned out for me. Aqualung is one of those rare iconic albums that changed the landscape for the band and put them on the map, worldwide. There's a reason for that and the reason is the material is strong, with good hooks, thoughtful lyrics, and catchy melodies. The hallmark of any good and lasting album. Thick as a Brick is entertaining but it's difficult to look at it as anything other than a concept piece and one long song that spans two sides of an album. Sure there are all the things mentioned about Aqualung above, but it's not as easy to digest as Aqualung because of its concept and what it is.

Ahhh, another case where some fans feel the need to categorize everything. I would never consider Tull a Prog band, and I doubt Anderson would either. In fact I think from interviews, he gets a nice laugh at folks trying to find a category to slip Tull into.

I wouldn't call Tull a "prog band", either, but they certainly delved into the genre with TAAB and APP. They returned to more of the rock/folk roots with War Child, but subsequent releases have always contained elements of progressive rock in their sound.

As much as I love Aqualung (one of my very favorites) Thick as a Brick has been my #1 all-time favorite. All Tull releases from This Was through Storm Watch are in heavy rotation for me. If I had to (and I don't) I'd take TaaB.

They are so different even though created in close proximity to each other. I believe I'll keep them both.

Love both to death but still prefer Thick as a Brick by a slight margin. That album is just a masterpiece.

The only Tull album that needs to be in any non-Tull fan's collection.

    Easy, for me.

    THICK AS A BRICK.

I love AQUALUNG, too ... It was my first Jethro Tull album back in the summer of 1971 (at my older sister's prodding), but THICK AS A BRICK, well ... I love it. Love. It.

The 'Do You Believe In The Day" section in TAAB is just sublime. One of my favorite pieces of music Jethro Tull ever recorded.
