Just about all italian movies were shot silent, and had the dialogue dubbed in later. Even when you see them in the original language, it's still awkward.

    My favorite Clint Westerns:

    Unforgiven
    Outlaw Josey Wales
Coogan's Bluff (a modern western lawman goes to the big city)(was one of the first movies I saw down south with nudity in it)
The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
    A Fistfull Of Dollars

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is my favorite among the many I have seen. I have not yet watched High Plains Drifter but I am now persuaded to do so.

    1. Outlaw Josey Wales. This one screams for a special DVD version.

    2. Unforgiven. The new DVD finally does it justice.

    3. The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. I think I read somewhere (maybe Ain't It Cool News?) that AMC is going to run a restored print of this sometime in May.

Is the DVD a restored print, or no? It does look good on DVD, but not spectacular.

There's a lot to like about "Hang 'em High", but for me, the last half hour doesn't live up to the set-up preceding it. It just seems to lose its thread. The beginning of the film is a real grabber, though.

It's my understanding the DVD is not the restored print, but has additional footage that hasn't been shown since it's premiere in Italy. Maybe they'll make a DVD of this version.

The additional footage on the DVD is in Italian (IIRC) with English subtitles. Perhaps they found an English soundtrack source or are planning to dub the extended scenes to release the long version?

When I was a kid I was a nut for those westerns. Once on vacation in Florida I saw a triple feature matinee of Fistful, Few and TBTB&TU. I came out of that theater into the early evening Florida sunlight and was almost blinded
I really dig Josey Wales. I like the Chief Dan George character. I still use his lines sometimes. I used to like to say "Endeavor to persevere" a lot.
    Cool

Remembering more now - they got Eastwood to dub in his dialouge, then hired someone to mimic Lee Van Cleef.

Hey, Michael, never say never! After all, they said much music would never appear on CD! They said the Beatles would never release their outtakes; Don't give up!

My favorite is, "A Fistful of Dollars." I also like, "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly," and "The Unforgiven." "The Unforgiven" was kind of a western comeback of sorts for Eastwood; I loved the ending with Gene Hackman.

I really love the "A Fistful of Dollars" soundtrack. My father was no music fan or record buyer but was a big Eastwood fan. He actually bought the LP and played it over and over. IMO one of the best movie soundtracks. I found it on CD in 1998 on Razor & Tie.

Pale Rider, from 1985, is also a good, underrated Eastwood western.

Morgan Freeman's favorite 'Josey Wales'. The Unforgiven,
Joe Kidd ( with funky Lalo Schifrin score).

    The Outlaw Josey Wales
    Unforgiven
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
High Plains Drifter (though it could be cut by at least ten minutes...)

Oh, and another shout out for The Beguiled and I enjoy his Shane 'remake' though I could do without the pick-handle twirling moment that seems to come from one of his more inane movies

I like all his Italian Westerns, but as a kind of sub-genre, I find watching most other examples (barring Fistful of Dynamite and One Upon Time) pretty hard to take.

  20. The Outlaw Josey Wales
    Unforgiven
    High Plains Drifter

I like bits and pieces of all of the "Spaghetti Western's" he is in, with The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly at the top, but they are a bit tough to watch in places. It may be the copies I've seen, but the dialog vs video takes me out of the moment too often.

Oh, and another shout out for The Beguiled...

The possible issue here with mentioning "The Beguiled" is that it is not technically a "Western" as the OP requested.
Since the story takes place in the south during the Civil War, and not in the Wild West.
So it could be called an "Eastern" movie. ;)

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, of course.

Last time I watched it, my wife who had never seen the film before actually fell asleep just before the big climax in the cemetery:shake:
