Illmatic is such a freakin' good album, I had to go with that one (sticking with the list).

A lot of great albums on that list but, this one is probably better than all of 'em:

This one is probably my favorite rock debut album, maybe my favorite rock album:

I'll vote for PLEASE PLEASE ME, then. (You should have left out the option for "Other" ;) )

But it did show how favorite doesn't mean greatest. In general to others who do think it's the same, if you claim an album as the greatest for years and it also happens to be your favorite, then that artist robs your house and kills your dog, you most likely won't call it your favorite album anymore, but you can still call it the greatest.

Thomas Edison's earliest known recording from 1878
One of the oldest audio recordings of a musical performance — and possibly the oldest ever of an American voice — has been restored and is being heard for the first time publicly since it was recorded 134 years ago.

The audio, recorded on tin foil by Thomas Edison using one of his early phonographs, was made during a 1878 museum demonstration in St. Louis. The audio includes a man and a woman reciting nursery rhymes, bursts of laughter, and a cornet solo

For me it has to be Van Halen I. They were so hungry and yet polished, raw, and professional all at the same time. A phenomenal album.

How could you make a thread like this and not include King Crimson?

My personal favourite debut album though is probably Queen. Iron Maiden would be up there too.

What a strange tangent. If Florian Fricke killed my dog, I would still consider In den Garten Pharoas to the be the greatest album of all time. The two don't have anything to do with each other.

And while I know there are people who consider differences between "greatest" and "favorite", both are still based around subjective criteria (which is why the sports teams analogy does not work), so I don't bother differentiating the two.

Claude Lombard - (self-titled) is the greatest debut I've heard. The only album I've heard from her.

Nice to see Ready To Die and Licenced To Ill on the list. I voted The Cars because of the number of hit singles, it's basically a greatest hits album. Zep I and The Doors aren't my fav bands but are very impressive debuts by any standard. My favorite album from the list is Marquee Moon, and even though it's only an EP I would consider Chronic Town the debut album by R.E.M.

So many great debut albums by so many great bands!
