He began playing the piano at age five and is self-taught. A musical prodigy, he sang in the youth choir at his church and mastered the piano, drums, and guitar at an early age. According to Chuck D [of Public Enemy] he is proficient in 15 instruments.

As "music" is a very general term and unites lots of completely different genres, I could compile a list of 100+ artists.

    Present.

    Ask me anything.

Full Disclosure: I will answer with a musical phrase on a bandoneon that you probably will not be able to hear. ;)

The most influental for many generations of composers and musucians have to be JS Bach.

If you go to New Orleans and say anything but Louis Armstrong, they ride you out of town on a rail.

As far as just playing an instrument goes, that is who I thought of right away.

If there is a correct answer, it's J.S. Bach. Technical ability, compositional skills, prolific, influential, innovative, enduring.

Not sure it's possible to rank, say Art Tatum against Jascha Heifitz against JS Bach against Duke Ellington against Jimi Hendrix.

Musician as instrumental genius, as composer, as orchestrator, or all three?

This for me. The man died in 1827 and my young children ages 9 and 5 were just humming his songs to me this weekend. Plus he was a master writer at many musical forms of his day. Sonata, Symphony, Concerto and was an incredible piano player before he went completely deaf. That would today be comparable to someone like Paul McCartney making one of the best country, blues and rock albums of his generation.
