Great album, despite the religious direction, as is Shot Of Love. Saved is definitely the weakest of that trilogy, but even it has its moments. Musically, and in terms of live performances, it is a much better period than one would think. I have been hoping for a Bootleg Series live release from those shows since that series began. The Warfield show from '80 with Garcia guesting for a couple tracks is fantastic, and well worth seeking out.
Been a while since I listened to this. One of his lesser works overall, but it has a great consistent mood and I have always loved it. Perfect for a Sunday night wind-down:
Now ever since we was young kids it's been the same come down I get a call over the radio Franky's in trouble downtown Well if it was any other man, I'd put him straight away But when it's your brother sometimes you look the other way Me and Franky laughin' and drinkin' nothin' feels better than blood on blood Takin' turns dancin' with Maria as the band played "Night of the Johnstown Flood" I catch him when he's strayin' like any brother would Man turns his back on his family well he just ain't no good
Bruce's "country" album. It would have sounded a 1000 times better if he'd gone all the way with (pedal) steel guitar instead of synths but that's Springsteen in the 80s for you
Still don't understand the hate for this album at all. It's a favorite of mine. And that aside, for the most part, the synths aren't annoying and even the production is not what you think of when you think of 1987 production. It sounds good, I mean.
Taking a journey with Counting Crows today. Saw them live in 2002 and haven't given them much thought. Although listening to their catalog I'm very impressed. Great sounds.
Inspired by another thread here, I'm listening to Marah's Kids In Philly album, which I've never heard before (listening on YouTube) and think I am going to have to pick this up sometime. I heard good things about them back around when this came out, but never got around to checking them out. Then they went off in an Oasis like direction and flamed out bigtime. But this is sounding really good, reminding me of the Hold Steady a good bit (although this was actually back in the pre-Hold Steady days when Craig Finn was with Lifter Puller, who I haven't heard).
I think their first three, August and Everything After, Recovering the Satellites and This Desert Life are as good as anything pop music gave us in the last 25 years.
Mrs. Potter's Lullaby has long been my favorite tune of theirs. I'm on Hard Candy at present and I really like it too. I snuck a quick listen to a few cuts from their covers album over the weekend and really liked the treatment they gave some of the tunes I'm familiar with. Was really hoping that they'd include their Acadian Driftwood cover on that collection, but oh well.
