I find it hard to believe that no one has mentioned . . . Jane's Addiction.

So that's what happened to Ratzinger, he became Davros.

I got quite a surprise when I first listened to the early albums (only being familiar with Avalon previously). His singing changed so much over the years you could almost believe it was a different person.

  6. Little Feat without Lowell George???
    Rolling Stones without Mick Jagger???

Big Brother did two albums without Janis. They're borderline terrible.

Zephyr. Tommy Bolin's work in Zephyr is wonderful, but it can be excruciating to get through a full album of Candy Givens' singing.

Modest Mouse. Great music, supremely annoying vocals.

Duran Duran - quite a lot of the tunes are good, but Simon Le Bon has so many bum notes and strained vocals that it really irks me.

Kings Of Leon. No, I probably wouldn't like them anyway but I will never get past the vocals to find out.
    I love David Johansen's voice.

The Jeff Beck Group with Bobby Tench. Then again, the vocals weren't the only problem with those records.

A lot of people not digging Geddy Lee.

I like him and at least you know it's him when you hear it. Too many singers sound like arch other.

Guys like Lee, Plant and so on, at least they have a unique voice to me that makes up the band.

But to each their own. I respect everyone's opinion.

Can't believe Bon Scotts been named.

He is the greatest rock and roll front man of all time. Love his vocals as well.

DISCLAIMER: Before anyone takes a contract out on me, these are just my personal opinions, some still in the process of formation, developed over almost 6o years of listening.

Off-the-top-of-my-head list of bands I like, but would be easier to enjoy with a different singer, mostly because the voices are weak, wavering or just bad:

    Caravan (I'm working on it.)
Ten Years After (Alvin Lee stinks as a singer, and is overrated as a guitarist, but some of the boogie works for me, and they were occasionally adventurous.)
AC/DC (post-BIB, and even that sounded forced. The deterioration of Bruce Johnson's voice by the time of the Stiff Upper Lip DVD makes an otherwise excellent band performance borderline unlistenable.)
B,S&T (Al Kooper; he sounds like he has trouble breathing, let alone singing, but Child Is Father . . . is still one of my favorite albums.)
Ry Cooder (I know he's not a band, but I tolerate his singing for the sake of his playing. Even Leo Kottke has a better voice.)
    Crazy Horse
The Flying Burrito Brothers (tough call, Gram's voice is not as bad as the others I've listed here, just not strong or even enough to be completely convincing on "country" songs.)
Pentangle (see "Ry Cooder" and apply to Bert Jansch.)
    Phish
The Yardbirds (the songs on which I can actually enjoy the vocal can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Still one of my favorite bands, and I think the release of everything in stereo might lessen the effect of Relf's voice.)
The Zombies (Blunstone is a slightly better fit in his band than Relf in his, but not by a whole lot.)

Many of these would be fine if the singer was just a little bit stronger, more even in timbre, etc.

And of course, there are hundreds, if not thousands of lousy voices in rock and pop, but somehow when they combine with their bandmates and material, it works. Another thing is decent-to-good voices not well matched with bandmates or material, or voices that just overpower everything, but that's for another thread, or at least another post.

Radiohead. Good band but can't stand the vocals. I never understood why they are so highly regarded.

Probably U2. I just can't take those overly dramatic, breathy vocals.
