I've never been much of a Sonic Youth fan. One night I was having a conversation with a friend and he brought them up. I mentioned that I had seen them on Czech TV playing what sounded like Pink Floyd. My friend then told me about these SYR releases. A short while later I was in a Manhattan record store and they had all of them that are available on vinyl. I bought all of them on a whim. I've only listened to three of them so far and I liked what I heard.

I really like all their albums up to Goo. After Goo, they lost some of the great musicianship they used to have, songs lost their dynamic structure and became too repetitive for my taste. One of my favorite things is to play Trilogy when I'm in a bar on one of those digital jukeboxes. Lots of music for two credits.

This is one band that I have many of their albums but I hardly ever listen to them. I'm always amazed at the prices for their used original vinyl.

I think it was seven. There are two from this series that are CD only.

The SYR that i have - the Goodbye one , shows that there is such a thing as too many guitars. The OrRourke one sounded aimless. On the strength of those, I found the SRY self-indulgent and boring.

Today I consider the best SY album to be Screaming Fields, followed by Daydream. On vinyl the Death Valley '69 12".

The SYR albums and EPS are Sonic Youth recording whatever the hell they feel like recording and their major label albums were recorded, more than anything, to make their label happy. I love all of their studio stuff regardless.

    kevin5brown Analog or bust.

    :agree:

At first. I didn't "get" the SYR stuff. But then I did. And I am a much more complete and happy person.

No choice to choose official albums and SYR ep's? naughty, naughty.

I like both and they sound great on vinyl

I feel like the syr stuff is different, because it's basically copies of their influences

I'm actually really looking forward to the Sister remaster that is supposed to come out in an expanded form. Could this be the reason in the delay in reissuing it on cd and vinyl?
