But it's not really an adaptation of the original - at least not from what I understand.

It's a prequel. Is it a creatively unsuccessful prequel? That seems to be the consensus, but at least it's not the same old story rehashed for the eight billionth time.

"Pan" might be a terrible film, but I give it credit for its attempt to do something different...

So how long before we get a live action/CGI Winnie the Pooh? Yawn. Man I hated that whole thing when I was a kid.

But as for Pan? Well the odd tax loss doesn't hurt the bottom line.

Only if they can funnel this massive loss to another division that is making money or vice versa.

Especially at Warner Bros., where they love to lay people off and attribute blame.

5 Reasons ‘Pan’ Got the Hook at Box Office
    http://www.thewrap.com/5-reasons-pan-got-the-hook-at-box-office/

The headline I would have used was

"Why Did Pan Peter Out at the Box Office?"

Attempting to do something different only deserves credit if the end result is good.

    But wait, there's more...

How 'Pan' Turned Into an Epic Flop
The $150 million Peter Pan origins story opened to a paltry 15.5 million in North America and $20.5 million overseas.

Early on in Pan, a young Peter Pan asks "where's the bacon" when being served a watery bowl of gruel at an orphanage in World War II London.

Little did British director Joe Wright and Warner Bros. know how prophetic the question would become...

You know, as cynical and jaded as I am, I would've predicted much more than $15M, maybe at least $25M, especially for a movie that opened in 3500 theaters. This is an enormous fiasco.

my wife just got an email this morning that they are giving away tickets for 'pan' at a nearby casino, all you have to do is go there to get them.........probably another bad sign

  14. I wonder if it would have been such a big flop in years long gone?

(forget that it's a CGI fest which couldn't have been made at all back then)

This has the feel of "piling on" to me. In this day of Social Media and 100's (1,000's?) of "Reviewers" out there, it seems like they are trying to out do each other in making clever remarks about bad it was. I'm not saying it's good by any stretch (haven't seen it and probably won't at this point), but if this were made in the days before Millions of people knew what the reviewers said about 2 minutes after the end of the first showing, would people have stayed away in droves?

Okay, I saw this yesterday with about 10-11 ten year old girls for my daughters 10th birthday party.

Criticism wise, it was fairly good, for me....but the kids loved it.

I thought the contemporary songs used (Blitzkrieg Bop, Smells Like Teen Spirit) were totally unnecessary, and that the Hook character was such an over the top Han Solo/Indiana Jones mashup that it was distracting. There was almost no need to set it during WWII either. It is CLEARLY going for a Harry Potter/Narnia vibe.

But....the girls loved it (even my 3-1/2 year old did). They were very entertained. I can't speak for all of them but my two daughters most certainly know the Pan story, watch Tinkerbell, etc, so kids today DO know these characters. If I was around 10 or 11 years old, I probably would've loved it too. Hell, I loved Clash of The Titans and now it looks unbearably cheesy.

It's not a GREAT movie, but for kids I don't think it's anywhere near the critical fiasco that it's being played up as. I do agree with the post that says there's a certain amount of piling on now in the internet age, of trying to get the nastiest quip or put-down in the reviews.

I solemnly promise, this is the last story I'll post...

Warner Bros.' 'Pan' Could Lead to $150 Million Loss
    http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/warner-bros-pan-could-lead-831412

Note that these are not my stories. I'm merely quoting from Daily Variety, Hollywood Reporter, The Wrap, and Deadline:Hollywood, the four biggest industry news sites on the web. When they put this stuff on the front page, it's news.

It's been a weird year. Now playing at the Hell Multiplex: "Tomorrowland," "Fantastic Four," and "Pan." All three great ideas for movies... but the execution? Not so much. The headline I predicted was "PAN PETERS OUT AT BOX OFFICE."

"Hook" was very watchable when Hook himself was onscreen; Dustin Hoffman clearly had a great time on the set and hamming up the pirate's manners:

Well, in this era of sequels, prequels and remakes I don't think the 'origin stories' stop here. Sometime soon someone has a box office hit with another one (Jaws, The Early Years? Titanic; the Dock Story? Charles Foster Kane; the Boarding School Era?) and many more will follow....

All the adult actors did pretty well - it's just the movie was too long and tried too hard to be "magic".

And the kids were as annoying as could be!

For those mentioning "Hook" and how it performed, back then I had a video store and although I can't remember the exact deal the rental and maybe the retail VHS release was heavily subsidised in some way, it stands out as it was unusual, possibly a deal that if you took multiple rental copies they'd buy them back after a certain time, I recall the film being seen as a flop and them throwing lots of money at it to make the home video a success, there was also plenty of promotional material like standees and displays, it wasn't a great renter even with all the promotion.
