Just got myself a Quilter. Clean and loud! Still has a little of that weird Solid State midrange tone, not much, but I'm working on EQ-ing that out......
    Great amp, light, and powerful.

Gonna give this a try. Just bought a tubed preamp to go with a big Class A solid state amp.

Let us know how it works out.
I've tried the same a few times with varying results. Had better and more consistent results with a tube power amp and SS preamp.

I guess it depends how you throw it.

You don't think an engineer could do a better job if he was told to build something that sounds good, rather than build it within a certain price point ?

fmfxray373 Capitol LPs in the 70s were pretty good.

My Adcom GFA- 535 paired with a Chinese Music Angel tube pre-amp sounds really nice. Any comment I say about tube or SS is totally subjective. Good gear is good gear.

    lots of good posts here.
a lot of people think that tube preamp + ss amp is the best combo.
i actually think the opposite (ss preamp + tube amp) is a better combination.

I hear ya (pun fully intended), but I'm no where near being parted with my Plinius SA-Reference Amp. I would like to put tube amps in a system one day though.

I'm doing tube pre not because I think it's better, because I don't know for sure one way or the other. I'm doing it because I'm heavily invested in an SS amp (that I really love) but want to introduce tubes into my system somewhere.

Yup, the SA Ref is one of the best overall amps I've encountered, and bass, well, what can I say.
