Lenny Bruce was funny. Rickles was funny. Albert Brooks. Richard Pryor. Sam Kinnison, Rudy Ray Moore...great. Refering back now.

Don Rickles was (and is I think) heelarious. Albert Brooks I think is also hilarious...and Richard Pryor of course -heck all those guys are funny.
    Peter Sellers...John Cleese (very funny).
and of course Jonathan Winters gets my vote as well as Jim Carrey.... ...

Pointing out the futility of trying to determine whether something is funny or not. The only perspective you can be sure of is your own.

I think Leno is funny as a standup and I like watching him now as a guest, but his Tonight Show monologues were embarrassing, especially towards the end. The writers seem to go for lowest-common-denominator jokes that I could have written when I was 14.

I was so happy when he finally gave it up. He's better without it.

Adding to the above, George Carlin, Bill Hicks, and Robin Williams.

Carlin is the gold standard for me.

    No, you aren't alone.
I've never "gotten" Colbert and was shocked he was chosen to replace Letterman.

The promo spots alone sank it for me. I only ever watched late night shows for the live musical performances; okay with Leno, better with Letterman, zenith with Arsenio ...and died with Arsenio when he got canned the first time. YMMV Now, I don't even bother. Colossal waste of my time.

Did John Cleese "do it" with some sweet New Orleans jazz/swing/R&B/funk played by a mutli-cultural/multi-racial band? I think not!

I've been giving "The Nightly Show" with Larry Wilmore a few views. He started out great but it seems he's lost his way now.

After seeing this clip no one here at this forum should be complaining about "today's music". :D

Anyways, I don't think Colbert is funny either. I don't get it.

I do remember Colbert's presenting on the Daily Show's 2008 election special where as the results rolled in, he sat wearing headphones and a blindfold.

    "Lalalalalaaa I'm not listening!"

  19. I think the show's OK and Kimmel's a decent host, but he hit trouble when he started wearing a tie. He's more suited to a casual approach.

I'm a Colbert fan. I think he's witty, funny and intelligent; also very quick on his feet. I also love the band with Jon Batiste, who hails from New Orleans. I record the show every night its on and look forward to watching it the next morning. I guess he's not for everybody but I'll be happy if the show continues for many years to come.

Speaking of other comedians, my all time favorites are George Carlin, Richard Pryor and Louis CK. I also think Amy Schumer and Sarah Silverman are very funny.

I can't believe some of the comments on here that say he just does political conedy. Anyone who's been watching the show lately can see that he does more than that. People on here should especially appreciate his music spot. He gave practically half a show to James Taylor the other week. And this is one of the most "classic variety show" type things I've ever seen on a late night show.

I personally find this to be a much more entertaining show than Fallon or Kimmel.

I'll be impressed when he gives "practically half a show" to Ted Nugent. Not gonna happen.
