Couple episodes in and it is very good... enjoyed Daredevil much more. Maybe I'm old (not sure if this is a spoiler or not) but...

Hey... how do you use that 'spoiler' function when making a post?

Down to the final episode now and truly think this show went off the rails halfway through its run. I doubt I'll bother with a second season.

So that's how you do it...

Maybe I'm old... but I don't really want to see superheroes doing it... kinda best left to the imagination

Television is clearly the way to go for the serious stuff.

    I'm loving it too.

Netflix is also going to make "Luke Cage" and then my man Danny Rand AKA "The Iron Fist" which will then lead into "The Defenders". Netflix is doing this right.

I'm not a huge Marvel fan and have only read the Marvel wiki on the character. I like the character's role as a super hero in a hiatus of sorts while she pursues private investigation- seems to make her more human and relatable. Overall this Netflix series is beyond what I imagined, I like its dark edge and mature approach- and also Krysten Ritter is a better actor than I had previously thought- she does impressive work here, the supporting cast is very good too. Professional and well considered production quality. Thumbs up.

I'm at seven, and yes it does pick up somewhere around eps 4-6. I thought the scenes which show Jessica's use of super strength weren't overly convincing, not like say similar action scenes in Daredevil. Also, my fear that Tennant would ham it up as the villain so far haven't eventuated (maybe a teeny bit). Pretty good so far.

I'm looking forward to Iron Fist too. Apparently Carrie Anne Moss' character Hogarth works for Danny Rand so there's some foreshadowing going on not to mention Madame Gao in Daredevil of whom Iron Fist usually deals with. There's already speculation that Scott Adkins who will be appearing in Doctor Strange next year, could possibly be getting introduced in that movie? Some say he's a favourite for Rand. Heck, he just might make an appearance in next year's Luke Cage too. Heroes for Hire - now I'll be looking forward to that too. :)

As for future Netflix shows, The Punisher has got to be a no brainer. Casting Jon Bernthal is off to a fine start so far.

my wife and I have been watching, we just finished the third episode. I get the sense she's enjoying it a lot more than I am. not bad, just a bit plodding and as Deesky said above, Ritter's superpowers have not yet struck me as remotely believable. (and neither do Mike Colter's btw.)

is it a sign that I'm finally old when I'm watching the show and silently bemoaning sex scenes for being gratuitous?

    Yep, sorry to say.

My wife, never a reader of comic books, watched all the episodes with me, and she's hooked. She called it "awesome", a word she rarely uses.

I was surprised at the direction the show went, but quite satisfied with the ending. I thought the acting was great throughout, and exploring the attraction of Luke and Jessica was fun, although the scene of them in the hallway was reminiscent of Buffy and Spike in BtVS.

Really? Gratuitous? There's only about three or four of them, they're all only in the first handful of episodes, they're pretty short, there's no nudity and they all set up specific character points. I'm hoping for extended unrated director's cuts on the BluRay box set, m'self.

Up to episode 4. Not grabbing me like Daredevil did. Just doesn't look anything special and the characters are a bit flat. Will give it a couple more though.

Ditto for me on the first part. Sitting with the other half watching this.

As for sex scenes, they don't offend me at all I just think in this porn saturated internet age, putting them in mainstream media is a total waste of time and spoils the pacing. "Why are they doing that? Who's benefit is this for?"

A bit of boob and fumbling was welcome back in the 80's and early 90's (thanks Ms Mirren and Agutter) but now...just don't need it. Have the kissing and then just cut to the scene in the bed after, where the woman gets up still in her bra and knickers (???) and grabs the sheet.

I'm liking it. So nice to forego the typical super-hero introduction and origin story.

  17. There's more Sex In almost every movie made in the 70s

It's hardly a waste of time when the lead character is dealing with a heavy dose of sexual trauma and needs to be shown working her way through intimacy issues. For the benefit of viewers who want their characters to act like grown adults instead of children's playtoys?

It's not as if the sex scenes are spotlighted, but it does show just how weird and sanitized mainstream media was for so many decades that just acknowledging basic everyday activity is seen as unnecessary.

I would point out that it's essential that all the sex scenes are female-driven; they set up the mood of the show which informs the lead character's response to the big bad. (sorry; can't go into any more detail without knowing how far along the series everyone is) The "porn saturated internet" stuff (and lots of comic book stuff) is the exact opposite of what's shown in 'Jessica Jones' - this is female gaze and estrogen-cenric.

I agree, the sex scenes make total sense. The intensity of their lovemaking is neccessary to show the contrast of JJ being totally distanced afterwards. Also to show what it must mean for someone with superhuman strength to meet someone they don't have to hold back with. The scenes are essential in establishing the connection between JJ and Luke, imo.

    And we were very grateful.

I just think they look unrealistic, contrived and out of place in mainstream media. Like they are trying to shock or be a little edgy. It worked many years ago, just not now. Ohhhh look they both have their underpants on...how sweet! This isn't necessarily in relation to this show but most in general.

Maybe if the woman (or man in certain situations) just shouted out after "Dammit...I need a tissue...NOW!! NOT ON THESE SHEETS!!!"?

Comparatively I don't really see anything gratutitous in this non-network TV series. Demonstrates super heros get horny too, Jessica's sexuality, and detachment issues- since, so her sister says, her men "never stick around long enough for me to form an opinion". And it's Krysten Ritter, what's to worry about?

showing two characters having sex, eating, and then immediately having sex again within the span of 2 minutes of screen time is not "female gaze and estrogen-cen(t)ric" at all.

regardless, one can be made to know that characters of had sex without showing the characters having sex repeatedly. and this bothers me not so much because of the on-screen sex, but because of the lazy writing. sex scenes used that way are fillers, they're not clarion calls on behalf of women's rights or examples of a character battling trauma.
