Practically everyone I know does. My friends, my girlfriend, my ex wife. It's the only style of music I get an instant "Turn that s*** OFF!" from everyone I try to introduce it to. I like a LOT of different music but black metal is my favorite style. It just seems to be loathed by so many. Wondering why it's so polarizing.

It's not music I listen to every day but I like it very much. I guess the vocals are an acquired taste but the music hooked me when I first heard it... that atmospheric, storming, blurred kind of sound that black metal guitarists are able to conjure up... like being in a blizzard! :pleased:

Anyway I dig some Darkthrone, Burzum, Emperor, Mayhem... all the classic bands but I also love more modern artists like Wodensthrone, Wolves In The Throne Room, Deafheaven, etc. I am currently digging these guys:

Never heard any. Who are the leading lights of the genre?

I like it because it's the closest thing to classical music you'll find in heavy metal. Yes, the vocals are an acquired taste but the musicianship of the genre cannot be denied.

Whew, hm, some of the leaders of the genre would be Darkthrone, Drudkh, Emperor, Mayhem, Marduk, Gorgoroth, Blut Aus Nord (my personal favorite), and early Bathory just to name a few.

that's black metal? that's dope as hell.

I was expecting more ideology and weird aggressive things I attribute to various other subgenres.
Labels are confusing- and a turn-off.

These are some of the essential albums. All awesome, Riffs from the land of ice. Then you have the shenanigans behind the music

One of my current faves, and one that should appeal to fans of prog, is Deathspell Omega. The previously mentioned Blut Aus Nord is another. Excellent musianship & excellent tunes!

I was listening to the clip above and enjoying it until, yes, the vocals. That is really hard to get past.

Indeed it is, but, believe it or not, it not an easy thing to do to perfect the Black Metal screech.

It really depends on the band. I love Agalloch for example.

The vocals are buried too deep in the mix for my taste and the psychedelic middle section gives it just as much of a doom sound. Still kick@$$ though.

For whatever reason I got into the vocals straight off. I consider them another instrument. They really add to the power of the music.

To be honest, I'm not sure what Black Metal is but am always interested in hearing types of music that are new to my ears. I hope some good samples get posted here. One thing I can say for sure is that I won't hate it. I don't love or like everything I hear but I don't hate any music. None a'tall.

I don't hate it but I'm not a fan either. It's just not the kind of music I gravitate to, that's all.

I don't hate it, I just don't like. It's not my cup of tea and the same goes for other genres like techno, hiphop and country. As long as people enjoy this kind of music, why should I be the one to hate on it? Seems pretty meaningless. It's all music, in one shape or another. I'm sure some people don't like what I prefer, like krautrock or RIO, but as long as they don't think my musical enjoyment is lesser than theirs, I can respect their opinion.

I like the right albums, mostly the older stuff. I suppose I'm fairly picky, but I don't really hate any of it.

And I've never really found the vocals to be an issue. Indeed, it's more or less another instrument.

  25. I consider myself a fan.
Mayhem, early Darkthrone, Marduk, Immortal, 1349, Watain.

All great stuff but none of my friends would be into any of it and I don't even bring it up.
