I was looking at listings for various DCCs and it seems that so many of them seem to be missing the outer slip covers. Why are all those slip covers missing? These were bought 20 years ago by people who I thought took care of their stuff and valued complete packages. Anyone else annoyed by this? The sad part is sellers think I'm /other people are going to pay a lot of money for a DCC without a slip cover.

Some of the first ones I bought came in the same plastic trays that the Mofi Ultradiscs came in (without a slip case). That could explain why some are being sold without.

True. But the ones I'm referring to did have a slip cover upon release.

Welcome to collecting. Original inners sleeves get thrown out. CD slip covers, hype stickers, fan club and other inserts - all thrown out. Polls here, in this very era, show that some people still do it. They want the music and don't care about the packaging.

It is odd though seeing this behavior with audiophile releases. People pay four times as much for an MFSL record - then treat it like junk. Even a local stereo shop place does this. Brand new releases laying opened, on the carpets, stacked record to record -- 8 records laying vinyl to vinyl at an angle. All outside their covers. A coat of dust on the top one. Maybe a large catalog setting on top of them or a product box with a large bungle of wires inside it, ends draped over, the metal tips laying on some CDs or vinyl which are laying on the floor. Then they grab one to play for a customer - to show em how good the systems in the room sound.

    Go figure.

Because it's a piece of cardboard outer packaging that few care about and the music is what's important to most. Seriously, finicky hardcore collectors that keep this kinda stuff (like me) are the .00001% of the audio world, that's why. In a perfect collectors world, everyone would still have their CD longboxes too.

I know I never thought anything about the slip covers or j-cards and such in the past as anything but excess packaging. I tossed them and never gave a thought to collectibility or value for resale.

If not for just-in-case resale purposes, I would've pitched my DCC slipcases, too. They're nothing to look at, and most looked dog-eared and creased as soon as the shrinkwrap was off.

I have mine in a shoebox along with MFSL J-cards and slipcases from the few Sony single-layer SACDs I still have. So, long story short, I can totally see why many people wouldn't keep them.

Some of the original DCC Gold CD releases have three releases. An original Japan pressing, long-box only no slip-case, the second Japan releases had the slip-case only and a USA pressing, slip-case only. There are also some that have only two releases being the Japan long-box and the USA slip-case.

I never kept slipcases or j-cards until DCC morphed into Audio Fidelity.

And as above, the slipcases weren't a thing until longboxes went away. So an early title wouldn't have one unless it was re-pressed, I guess.

Don't forget, in some cases, people pick these titles up from a used CD shop. Not all stores keep that kind of packaging.
As a further example, there's a great store in my neighbourhood that will often put older two CD sets in a slim case, removing it from the original "fatboy" case because they can fit more Cds that way on their shelves.

The only thing that matters for me is if the CD is in great shape. As long as it plays perfectly, I'm happy.

Really don't understand the obsession with cardboard packaging that makes the discs more unwieldy to file. Obi's as well. It's just extraneous crap.
