A shot of the backdrop that was originally planned for the Feb. 9 broadcast, with Neil Aspinall standing in for an ailing George Harrison, and a photo with Tessie O'Shea, one of the other performers on the show...

Looks like Miami's CBS affiliate, WTVJ, lent some equipment to CBS for the broadcast from the Deauville Hotel...

Still my favorite shot of them. That forced perspective makes the TV background look EPIC.

For all its flaws, i like how their skin and hair color look here as opposed to most colorization attempts. Also, the drum cymbals look more natural, usually they are almost always banana yellow when colorized.

Are there any pictures of the group performing that show the audience?
(from any Beatles appearance on Ed Sullivan)
    Thanks in advance

It looks like at least one amp is off to the left side and miked. That's the first time that I have seen a picture showing an amp in the Ed Sullivan series of pics.

I wonder why the Sullivan show had an aversion to showing amps on stage. It wasn't just the Beatles. I am trying to rack my brain to remember if any group had amps shown behind them.

I've always wondered that too, and what were they using?

With all the different backdrops...maybe the arrows were a last minute idea.
    (thus...last minute painting)

Yes, that's exactly what happened. In one of the books I have, the set designer explained that at the last minute he decided to switch to a new stage design that emphasized the fact that The Beatles, after all the anticipation, were, finally, right here (in America and on Ed Sullivan). That's what the arrows were intended to convey.

What's up with the flashing colored lights? Were they present at the show or something added by the colorizer?

I'm just glad they didn't use the giant banner "The Beatles".
I could envision that being the first plan but it was too big to fit in shot.
    Thinking BIG...looking small
(Time to invent the arrow...and 'bow')
    Ahem...

John's amp in background? This is the first amp I've seen on Ed Sullivan Beatles appearances. Thank you.
