Got a 4k Sony with 3D, the grandkids love it watched the latest Hobbit and the new Goosebumps in 3D the other night fantastic picture and effects such as the popouts. I have the passive glasses, can't do the active as I get a headache from them.

The 3DS's "3D" didn't work for me. At all. No matter how I adjusted it or stared at it. This was across multiple units, so it wasn't a defect. Obviously it works for some users, but would seem to be less "compatible" with users' eyeballs than a set of active glasses.

The difference between active and passive is the difference between 1080p and 540p. You wind up losing half the scan lines.

I think that for active glasses it's more like the difference between 1080P and 1080i. You're not losing half the resolution, but half the frames. Using polarizing glasses do cut the resolution in half. Maybe that's why the companies you see ditching 3d seem to be the ones that promoted passive glasses. Maybe there's also little profit to be made on the glasses themselves.

Had a Samsung with 3D. It developed the Samsung skid mark where I learned a couple of important lessons. 1) 3D is irrelevant. Never watched it. 2) Samsung sucks.

I am not a big Samsung fan, but I do have three TVs (not 3d) and they have all been perfect!

But you don't lose half the visual quality. It still looks like HD, not as if you're suddenly watching standard definition. It's most noticeable during the credits, where you can see some jagged edges on the text. Passive can also be less prone to ghosting.

Yeah I can't help but think they can put a special glass on the TV to make it 3D.

540p is still higher than standard definition. It is what it is. You still lose every other vertical line. (Although that's not entirely true. The left eye sees half and the right eye sees the other half.) It may not be completely noticeable at normal viewing distance but it's there. Passive 3D is full HD from left to right but not from up to down.

I'd love to see a 4K set with 3D. Because that way the 3D doesn't lose as much resolution. Agreed, I like the passive, too. Better than the active. There's a new format being developed by Douglass Trumbull which will improve 3D even more. Ang Lee's next movie is being filmed in the format. I can't wait to see it.

I didn't think it was worth it until I got a projector with 3D. I love watching movies in 3D on it. If and when I go 4K, I will definitely go with a 3D capable machine if it is available. In fact, the lack of 3D would significantly influence whether I upgrade at all.

For me, it isn't as big of a deal on my regular TV, though.

Yep my first Samsung 4k gave up the ghost from the git go the picture was awesome thier reliability and thier CS department suck. I hated the active glasses, after I got my money reimbursed I went with a Sony 4k with passive should of never left Sony as I never had issues with any Sony set.

After 10 minutes playing on the 3DS, I felt like I'd just spent three days in the pub.

I'd like to have a 3-D TV, but as I won't have a Smart TV in my house, I'm SOL.

I bought my Panny Plasma 3D TV about 3.5 years ago. Don't know what you all are talking about. My daughters and I enjoy the hell out of 3D movies. I have all kinds of 3D Blurays. The only issue I have with the glasses, is they dim the display a LOT. Other than that, it's quite entertaining.

Have you guys tried any of the VR headsets like Google Cardboard? Other than the narrow field of vision, it's pretty good, at least for a bit. There's a 3D/360 degree Paul McCartney concert that's a lot of fun. I think it'll be some time before the tech is more than a gimmick, but considering you can get a headset for as little as 20 bucks and the media is mostly free, it's worth checking out.

Me too, as in I wear glasses. So I need to wear two pairs to "enjoy" 3D? I'll pass.

Yes a real Professor Brainstorm. The Penny actives can fit over my glasses but my nose isn't long enough to support both.

Oh, there are some people spending some good money on the equipment for VR entertainment. And it ain't Dreamworks. Considering the product, look at some of the sweet equipment. Yep, there's one form of entertainment that always dives on the latest "you are there" technology -- like being one of the first things "movie pictures" captured on celluloid.

You know that just came out on 3D BD, right?

I got a review copy but haven't watched it yet. I saw it in theaters and recall it being pretty awful! :)

I have a Panny DMP-BD80 player and a Samsung 64" D7000, and I haven't watched a 3D title in a while. So after reading this thread I splurged on the deluxe 3D version of Pixar's latest, Inside Out. Well guess what? The disc doesn't recognize the BD80 as a 3D player. It says to get a different player or do a firmware update. The firmware is current and was released over a year ago. Hopefully another update is coming so I don't have to trash the thing. Grrrrr...
