The Sutcliffe family claims this is Stuart singing Love Me Tender.
There have been some investigations into whether it is or not. http://www.stuartsutcliffefanclub.com/lovemetendersherry.html and http://www.stuartsutcliffefanclub.com/lovemetenderdb.html
and here's some quotes from Stuart's sister Pauline:
    http://www.examiner.com/article/exc...liffe-s-sister-tells-why-voice-on-song-is-him
But Klaus Voorman and Bill Harry seem to think it isn't him.

    So....Judge for yourself:

According to that link it appears Paul wrote the song for Pete to sing so Paul could play the drums for a song. It wasn't much more than a chant. Pete on "Boys" would have been more of a challenge, as it is not an easy song for a singer to perform, with rhythm shifts (supposedly not Pete's strength) and alternating parts.

Wouldn't they have played all of their current singles at the Cavern before they stopped performing there in August 1963?

That would mean that Love Me Do, Please Please Me and From Me To You and their b-sides.

This same list is included in the book, "The Best of Fellas, the Story of Bob Wooler", by Spencer Leigh. Which BTW, is a pretty good read.

I wondered the same thing. It would seem likely. Does anyone know?

It seems likely that both were performed. So far I found this re: Please Please Me: "As stated earlier, there is no direct evidence to show that “Please Please Me” was performed live before its’ being recorded in the studio. It can be assumed that the song was performed thereafter at their December 1962 Cavern dates in Liverpool as well as their fifth Hamburg visit which lasted until the new year.Being that the song was released in Britain on January 11th, 1963, they surely performed it at any gigs they had that month. http://www.beatlesebooks.com/please-please-me

Using the same logic: given that they last performed at the Cavern on August 3, 1963, From Me To You could have been added to the setlist. Even She Loves You, which had been recorded a month previously though not yet released. Why not show off the upcoming single?

    Anyone have more insight?

Not sure but I thought One After 909 was done at the Cavern.

Interesting. I wonder what the sources are. It makes sense that they'd play instrumentals of the day such as Apache and Walk Don't Run.

The songs listed cover their pre-fame repertoire so it makes sense to include Love Me Do but not Please Please Me as the latter got them famous.

I find it surprising that the list includes How Do You Do It? I doubt they would have played that live but then again, the link claims "Songs The Beatles had played before becoming famous." They don't claim that everything on the list had been performed before an audience.

Fab fans, I dug out my copy of Mark Lewisohn's earlier book, The Beatles Live.
Included is his "attempt" to detail the live performance repertoire of the Beatles in 1961.

The Beatles played the Cavern a lot in 1961 so it's not out of the question that some of the songs not listed in the OP's post but listed here might have been played at the Cavern also. He lists the songs for every year the Beatles played live so I picked 1961 as a good year to list. The list of songs from all the years are fascinating. He even has the songs listed from 1957-1959!

I apologize in advance if some if these songs have been mentioned already, but it's too tedious to look at both lists and then look at the other posts, etc. Enjoy!

Mark also lists the original artist and which Beatle sang which song. Because he puts a question mark when he's not sure who the vocalist was, and knowing Mark's reputation for thoroughness, we can reasonably assume he had some evidence regarding these things.

It's really a shame that no known Beatles version of this has ever surfaced.
The Tommy Quickly version is so bad that its hard for me to assess how good the song MAY have sounded if the Beatles, or anyone else that was competent had done it.

What!!?? You've never heard of Digger Revell & the Denvermen?

This is a better version. It was a B-side from the group that achieved some success at home (Australia).

Agree - far better and more Beatley than either of the other two, especially the harmonies.

I thought of this very book when I read the OP's first entry. Unlike you, I was too lazy to dig it up and list the songs. Thanks for doing so. :righton:

Yes, I checked this out before I posted the Quickly one but I had to run out to the store so I didn't post it. :D

I agree, it's probably closer to the way the Beatles might have done it, that's for sure.

I haven't thought about Tip of My Tongue for a long time, probably because I didn't enjoy it. You got me thinking and then googling. I like it better now. :D

I take it from your avatar quote that you are a much bigger fan of Hello Little Girl (except your spelling is off!). ;)

You are welcome and that's just Lewisohn's song list from 1961, so there are other songs listed that may have been played at the Cavern also in other years.
