As someone else pointed out, there are two different types of "soloing." Prewritten solo's and improvised solo's.

Walt is a woodwind musician (sometimes credited as "reeds"), meaning he might be capable and expected to play many different types of saxophones, flutes, clarinets, oboe, bassoon and more.

I agree that he seems to have little capability to improvise well on the sax. On the first five albums, he could get away with it to an extent, since the band was much more experimental; frequently playing avant garde or free jazz. His BS improv sort of blended in with that.style.

However, I've usually loved his flute work. It seems strange that he could improvise on the flute but not the sax...

For that matter, Lee Loughnane never seemed very capable of improvising in the early days, but he may have gotten better. Perhaps that's why James Pankow got more solo's; plus the fact that he was writing the arrangements! (although I've heard him struggle with improve at times as well).

"Hello everyone! I know you’re all waiting to hear what’s happening with the Hall of Fame. I know how frustrated you all are, but trust me, no one is more tired and frustrated than yours truly. I had a conference call with the musical department today and I’ve presented another song option. Right now it’s about a fidy fidy chance that we can hammer something out by the weekend. Frankly folks, Im done if this doesn’t work out. Here’s hoping this one works…Ill let you know either way ASAP…"

You know what?.... Cetera can take a hike. All the great early albums like CTA were written by other members. And the 80s shlock was written by Cetera. Stay home if you like Peter.

    Oh brother, indeed.

I'm not going to pretend that I have any inkling what this is all about, 'cause I don't, but there is one problem that resulted when the Rock Hall decided to turn the whole induction ceremony into a commercial venture...broadcast, home video sales, etc., etc. That is, it isn't just about a band getting up there and playing their most famous songs. There's also a financial component at hand.

Now, whether or not this latest turn has anything to do with that, or it's simply more "rock star" posturing, ego-tripping and/or immature behavior, but, as is usually the case, it's the fans who potentially lose out the most.

    So, once again, I say.........sigh.

With an "ugh" thrown in for good measure.

Those of you who are complaining about his latest note know nothing. You read words and jumped to conclusions. You don't know if the issue is on his end or Chicago's. You even know what the issue is, yet you've decided he's "a brat" and should "stay home". Man, it must be difficult to be in the public eye and be judged so harshly when those who judge know absolutely nothing.

Here's another piece that may actually add a little insight as to what's going on. I didn't make much of some of the vague and conflicting responses when I read it yesterday, and obviously before today's announcement. But, as noted, it might help in understanding some of the complications/variables involved, or, at least, what's currently going on.

It appears the Hall themselves may be the issue. Interesting...

Maybe the R&R HOF wants them to play "Old Days" and that's causing a problem for Peter. You know, all that Howdy Doody stuff. :D

Just kidding. Cetera could very well not be the issue here.

I am a fan of the Kath years FAR MORE than the 1980s output. Peter was an indispensable element in the band's initial success. Between his vocals and killer bass playing, his contributions were significant.

It amazes me how many Chicago fans want to kill this guy over a situation that they don't know anything about. :chill:

Tribune: Congratulations on Chicago’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The ceremony for the class of 2016 is in April in New York City. There have been mixed reports as to whether or not you’ll join the members of the old band to play at the show. What’s the word?

Cetera: Thank you. I’ll be there to accept the award. I might and I might not (play with the group). It’s a matter of if we can come to an agreement as to how it comes down.

Tribune: How do you feel about the band’s induction?

Cetera: It’s 20 to 25 years too late. That’s what I feel about it. It’s not making me jump up and down. I want to thank the people who voted for us. That was great. But I’m neither here nor there about it. I couldn’t care less, to be honest. Part of it is they want you to perform. I haven’t played with those guys in years. I don’t care to play with their band. We’ll have to come to some sort of agreement as to how it can be worked out. It’s kind of like being asked to jump into bed with your ex-wife.

This doesn't look good. I don't think that he will be playing.

Interesting update, few months away probably won't be a performance happening. At least Peter picks up a statuette.

Eh, whatever. Sounds like Cetera's "solo career" of playing the casinos was really suffering during this month-long ordeal, so I'm glad he can finally get back to it...

It was the Hall that was the issue, not him. It's not Chicago's fault either. Man, some people just want to blame him no matter what they read. Have at it, I guess.

Unfortunately, at this point, we really don't know if it was the Rock Hall's "issue or fault" either, or who the unreasonable one(s) was/were...if any. Just that all the parties involved couldn't come to a mutual agreement.

And I'll hold my tongue as to how I personally feel about that.

It appears to be the Hall themselves. In truth, I don't definitively know. None of us do. That's my point. People have been going off half-cocked when they don't know. Until we do, it's not particularly fair to make it all Peter's fault.

Although I don't know the specifics of what is going on, there is something quite obvious:
For many Chicago fans, Cetera is an all-purpose Piñata.
