I'm loving the Exact on my P25...

  2. Maybe it's that mysterious system synergy thing and my combination of amp and speakers just works with the Ortofon. There was no comparison.

    Yes.

  5. Blimey!

  6. I think I've posted this before - I had an Ortofon bronze on my RP3 for a few months and was loving it, but it developed a humming problem with the Rega which was entirely resolved in the end. However, the guys at the hi-fi store reluctantly offered me an Exact in return for the Ortofon after the problem initially developed as there seemed to be a conflict between the Ortofon cartridge and the PSU that my Rega was using.

The Exact lasted exactly one session! It made everything sound muddy, muffled and distant in comparison to the Ortofon. It wasn't horrendous, but it wasn't great either. I went back to the shop, asked for the Ortofon bronze back (which they'd knowingly kept aside for me), removed the PSU and was back in analogue heaven that night.

I realise this was just my experience. But my next cartridge will be another Orotofon bronze or a black. It's transformed the sound of my RP3.

  7. And the problem with the PSU was eventually resolved, it was all my fault!

Not exactly "all Rega" but an awesome sounding system just the same!

I owned for a while the Rega Osiris it really was a great amp but ultimately just too potent for my speakers.

  15. How is that Lehman Black Cube? I had a few moments where I thought about upgrading to that, but I've since calmed down and I'm happy with my Rega phono stage.

Just curious about your experience with the Rega Quattro cables. I am running

    Rega Mira
    Rega rp3 TT
    totem Rokk speakers.
    DNM reson solid core cables.

I swapped the solid core cables (which I loved and was borrowing) for the rega Quattro cables. I was told any Rega amp is a bad match for the solid core cables. People suggested the Quattro for synergy.

I got them yesterday and was so let down. They sound murky and lack a presence.

Was there a break-in period for you? I was just wondering if I'd made a big mistake here.

    Thanks in advance!

If I had to choose between Elex-R and Elicit-R for a small hi-fi-room?

I read somewhere that the Elex-R sounds better in small places, because the Elicit-R is just too powerful which probably could make it sound fatiguing and unpleasant in smaller rooms.

Is this right or just not to be taken seriously?

    Speakers would be ATC SMC17.

P.S.: I currently own Marantz PM8004 ... would the Elex-R be a noticeable step-up (despite the different 'sound signature' from both brands)? What to do with my Clearaudio Concept TT, not sure how that will partner with Rega?

Shouldn't make a difference based only on amplifier power. However ,if you are using small inefficient speakers the more powerful amp will less likely be driven into distortion/clipping. If I remember correctly the B&W 685 listed in your profile are 87Db (I checked). If you can afford it and plan on your listed speakers go for the more powerful amplifier.

I'm hoping to get the atc scm17 speakers simultaneously with a new amp in the future.

I didn't see the 17's on the ATC website, but the 19 is listed at 85 Db 1 watt @ 1 meter. I would still go for it he bigger amp. It's easier to wreck a speaker with a low powered amp than an amp with ample reserve power.

The older DAC, or the newer DAC-R?

I have owned the original DAC, I still have the DAC R. Both are very good, the USB implementation is the prime difference and if you don't need USB the old DAC is a bargain.

Go to the Rega site. They have the HiFi Choice review up where it won their best under 800GBP. Good review and I agree with most of it. Also a Stereophile review out there.

I run an RP6 and a DAC-r through my Fisher 500c into some Cornwalls. Fantastic sounding combo.
