I found this clip of NicK Digilio's WGN radio show where he talks about musician cameos on TV shows and also other great cameos on TV shows and movies and I just wanted to share. :)

    Great TV and Movie Cameos

My favorite example of a musician cameo is the A-Team episode with Boy George- the absurdity of it (even by A-Team standards) is just unbelievable. George is so incredibly coked-up throughout the episode.

Another great example is Stevie Wonder on The Cosby Show (Jammin' On The One!). This one is cool because Stevie shows off his synthesizer and is actually pretty damn funny.

Musically, Miami Vice didn't have a lot of performing ones that spring to mind other than Power Station.
I know the Temptations appeared at the start of a Moonlighting episode in a very funny segment involving Psychedelic Shack.

Nothing like a bunch of high schoolers in their 20's. That laugh track is really annoying- they keep playing it every 5 seconds even when nothing particularly funny is happening on screen.

Bran doesn't do a half-bad job in this, though!

Power Station in "Whatever Works", performing "(Bang A Gong) Get It On"
El Debarge in "Bought And Paid For", performing "You Wear It Well" and "Rhythm Of The Night"
Jan Hammer in "One Way Ticket" and "Like A Hurricane", as a wedding musician performing unnamed pieces

In "Like A Hurricane", Sheena Easton sings "I Got You Babe" in a recording studio in character as Caitlin Davies.

An unknown cover band plays Bette Midler's "Only In Miami" and Lionel Richie's "All Night Long" in the pilot episode "Brother's Keeper".

This is all I've ever seen the band in and I think they're hilarious in this episode.

Not QUITE the 80s (it was still the late 70s), but The Doobie Brothers on "What's Happening!"

Rerun does a little Mike Millard ... not every day you see a sitcom episode about bootlegging.

 I forgot all about that. Tiny Tim is funny there!

  23. I know that the "good" Dr. Landy had Brian make some truly cringeworthy television appearances in the late '80s, but that's easily the best I've seen so far, and I just love the in-joke of his character's name! His keyboard miming skills aren't fantastic, though it's clearly a role where he's not expected to be convincing, rather simply being a guest intended to help lead into a musical sequence. Unfortunately, there's no such excuse for the frequently horrible cameos his estranged bandmates came up with around the same period...

P.S. Speaking of Brian Wilson on television, has anyone ever uploaded that reality show mentioned in his autobiography? From what I read about this, he was placed in the middle of nowhere, with the film crew instructed not to intervene under any circumstances. If the description given by Landy (through ghost writer Todd Gold) is remotely accurate, I doubt this was ever broadcast due to how the Beach Boy would regularly explode in ways that suggest he was going without medication or at least unable to be treated as normal for the time.

Also recall The Beach Boys on Full House, Adam Ant on Northern Exposure (90's though), and too many to list in animated form on The Simpsons.
