I have enjoyed Poco since their first album! I almost envy you having the opportunity to hear their music fresh and new. I believe I have listened Poco more than any group outside of The Beatles, Beach Boys, Dylan and Bruce. I am listening to one of Richie Fury's Christian CDs "I Am Sure" as I write.

The Out of Print 2fer of From The Inside and A Good Feelin' To Know is an awesome combination for the music if you can find it!!

To the OP, I would recommend the following cd's:

Pickin' Up The Pieces (1995 Legacy w/bonus track, or the Audio Fidelity disc w/out bonus track)
    Poco (stock U.S. cd)
Deliverin' (stock U.S. cd) *Note the Quad Lp has extra applause bits. I would love an expanded version
From The Inside (Iconoclassic w/2 bonus tracks)
A Good Feelin' To Know (stock U.S. cd)
    Crazy Eyes (1990's Legacy cd)
    Seven (1990's Legacy cd)
Cantamos *Wounded Bird cd is ok, if a little trebly.
Live (One Way cd) *recorded live 1974, released 1976...I would love an expanded version
Live At Columbia Studios 1971 * Recorded live in the studio...very cool set, and if you love From The Inside, you'll get a decent helping of those songs.

Excited to say that Forgotten Trail arrived much quicker than expected and in time for the week end! Things are about to country rock around here.

I'd start with Forgotten Road...even though you're missing the MCA years.
If you like it, get the following four:
    Poco (the 2nd album)
    A Good Feeling To Know
    Head Over Heels
    Legend

These are solid albums from different eras - and it may give you a better idea of what you like best.
Pickin' Up The Pieces is also highly regarded, if you like the country flavor.

As one who followed Buffalo Springfield, went to their concerts, was devastated after the Long Beach finale, and eagerly awaited SOMETHING to come out by any of them, I was really disappointed with Pogo/Poco. But as the op has ordered Forgotten Trail, I will say that "My Kind Of Love" on that cd was at least a single that, when released ahead of the first album, gave me a bit of hope in what the band was gonna do musically.

In the early years when Poco was around and I'd also go see them play, I bought all the albums (no clue why since I couldn't get into them) and here is basically what I'm left with that I like..

    My Kind of Love
Calico Lady... I like Randy's bass playing on that one
The 18 minute thing on album 2
Early Days .... not sure why, but I do like that one
Faith in the Families... for a couple of minutes anyway

That sort of makes for one album worth of music doesn't it?

Ghost Town is a solid effort...love "Break Of Hearts" from that album.

  18. Interestingly, it's often rated the worst. I've never heard it bexause I didn't even know it was released back in the day. I will have to pick up the new remaster.

I wouldn't get The Forgotten Trail until after Cantamos. Poco is a band the grew with each album. Each album shows progression, but is perfectly fine on its own. I'd barely want to eliminate even a single track. They were that consistent. Even with the loss of critical band members, Jim Messina in 1971, and Richie Furay in 1973, they were always really good. I'd say they were just about the most consistently good band on record until Under The Gun in 1980. Even that one is a good record, but there was a dip in my opinion.

We ran a Poco "Album-By-Album" several years back.

  20. I forgot I slipped that in.

Yeah that CANTAMOS quad is really sweet (as is CRAZY EYES). Haven't heard the other quads yet. Paging Audio Fidelity!

Oh the SEVEN Quad is stunning! My favourite of the 3 Poco studio Quads. Right from the start "Driving Wheel" is a surround showcase for Poco's wonderful vocals and arrangements.. fingers crossed Audio Fidelity choose to do Seven and Cantamos. Maybe they'd do Deliverin' on SACD too since they're just about to release that Bob Dylan Live Surround disc..

Ya know, there is a Quad disc of Deliverin'. But, I'd rather see Legacy do that one, to include material left off of the album :)

Edit...based on the setlists out there, songs left off the album include:

Hurry Up, Anyway Bye Bye, Don’t Let It Pass By, Nobody’s Fool/El Tonto de Nadie Regressa, etc. Whatever the truth is, I'd welcome outtakes.

Regarding the 1976 album , recorded in 1974, outtakes include:

Sagebrush Serenade, Railroad Days, I Guess You Made It, A Right Along, etc.

    Very Astute!

Baffling why "Good Feeling To Know" wasn't a monster hit, but something always seemed just slightly off in their recording and I finally figured it out. I think it's a few beats per minute slow. Live, I think they accelerated it a bit (and bands tend to do) and IIRC it inspired deserved enthusiasm. The studio recording seems like 98% there. Unsure if a slight speed up would have done the trick or not...
