That whole album was such a breath of fresh air when it came out. It was like he captured some of the spirit of '60s music without trying to copy it.

That reminded me that Sean Lennon is possibly the best Paul McCartney imitator of today:

You know what would be awesome? (Mainly for the conniptions it would engender in the SHTV general populace.) A Paul McCartney / Sean Lennon collaboration called simply Lennon / McCartney.

Wow -- that is a GREAT song! Sounds like a dead ringer for Jon Brion to me, actually...
It's a fun idea, but surely the inevitable name of this collaboration would be "McCartney/Lennon," no? ;)

Whenever this subject comes up I always post The Gants "My Baby Don't Care". Never heard it til recently on Little Steven's radio show. I don't think anyone takes the time to listen to it but you're missing out. A blatant rip off but great nonetheless. Sounds like Help era Beatles.

What album is that song "Smoke and Mirrors" by Sean Lennon from? I'm having a hard time tracking it down.

I don't know if it was released on an album. I have it on a Chimera Music sampler (catalogue number 0) that I downloaded from their webstore. Going back to it, it seems that a number of the tracks on that compilation are otherwise unreleased. Sean Lennon's folky psychedelic band Ghost of a Sabre Tooth Tiger (aka GOASST) is also rather Beatlesque.

I think "Star" by Stealers Wheel has a White Album Lennon vibe.

A lot of Cheap Trick's 'In Color' has an Abbey Road vibe, especially 'So Good to See You'.

I only read page one so I apologize if these got mentioned:

    It's Cold Outside (The Choir)-early Beatles Lennon/McCartney pop/rock

Words Enough To Tell You (The Mascots)-HARD DAY'S NIGHT era soft rock Lennon ballad

What Do You Know (Left Banke)-a Ringo song

When I Want To Know (The Remains)-sounds like early George

Sub Rosa Subway (Klaatu)-MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR era McCartney

Dr. Marvello (Klaatu)-66/67 era George song

    Mr. Radio (ELO)-66/67 Lennon psychedelia

Fresh As A Daisy (Emitt Rhodes)-WHITE ALBUM like McCartney pop

I always thought Elliott Smith often had a Beatlesque quality to his work (particularly on XO and Figure 8). Certainly melodically, and even though his voice is totally different, I think he had a Lennonesque character to his vocals. The White Album and Abbey Road were definitely influences on him, especially in that 'mid period' of his career (~1998-2000) on the Dreamworks label. He even did a nice remake of "Because" for the movie American Beauty.

No doubt the Beatles were a huge influence on Elliott's music. "Baby Britain" may be the most blatantly Beatlesque song he produced, but the late-era Fabs can be felt throughout his work. I think his final single -- "Pretty (Ugly Before") -- has a strong Revolver vibe, right down to the backwards guitar at the end.

  21. Brian Kelly

Brian Kelly 1964-73 rock's best decade

    A few more:
Yes It's True (Flamin Groovies)-straight off of MEET THE BEATLES
Modern Music (Be Bop Deluxee)-superb ABBEY ROAD track (even sounds like part of "You Never Give Me Your Money" at one point)
The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks (Eagles)-has an opening which sounds similar to "Birthday" and is a similarly fun song
Pulling Muscles From A Shell (Squeeze)-classic McCartney pop/rock
The India Song (Big Star)-a Harrison 66/67 track for sure
I Can Help (Billy Swan)-a country/rock Ringo tune
Golf Girl (Caravan)-a Lennon/McCartney song given to Ringo to sing
Your Number Or Your Name (The Knack)-melodic rocker of vintage early Lennon/McCartney quality
Can't Get It Out Of My Head (ELO)-Lennon type vocal to McCartney style song
10538 Overture (ELO)-psychedelic era Lennon track
No Matter What (Badfinger)-classic Beatles pop/rock
    Maybe Tomorrow (Badfinger)-a Lennon/McCartney 66/67 era ballad
Knocking Down Our Home (Badfinger)-McCartney old fashioned toe tapper
Carry On Til Tomorrow (Badfinger)-Lennon late period soft rocker
Fisherman (Badfinger)-Lennon/McCartney tune given to Ringo to sing

according to Bobby Hart the "no no no" bit was specifically patterned after the "Yea yeah yeah" in "She Loves You"

    I prefer this alternate version:

Ah, The Gants -- the pride of Greenwood, Mississippi. They put out fine records in several different styles. Too bad things didn't break right for them.
