Actually, starting with last year's game, the NFL now requires the halftime acts to PAY for the privilege of playing the show...ludicrous, isn't it?

That would actually require talent... the performers in this show need fireworks, a massive stage and 50 backup dancers to do anything

That, and the attention span (or complete lack thereof) by 99% of the population these days precludes that...

Who watches the freakin' Superbowl expecting a great rock concert? Give me a break. It's not about music, it's about massive spectacle.

That's for damn sure. For 90% of the people who watch it, they're only tuning in for the halftime show and the ads...it's only those of us who are huge sports fan (like myself) who watch it for the *GASP* game!

    Hey Carlos,
Isn't enough that San Fran got the Super Bowl?

Who mentioned "choreographed dance moves"? I brought up musicians known for their great live shows, none of whom just "stand there and play".

The point is that the most highly-regarded live acts tend to be those who put on a show, not the ones who simply "stand there and play".

And what's wrong with choreographed dance moves anyway? Are we supposed to view all those great R&B acts as inferior to "stand there and play" rock bands because they had "choreographed dance moves"?

Really? Prince, McCartney, U2, Springsteen, the Stones, etc., all needed "fireworks, a massive stage and 50 backup dancers" for their Super Bowl shows?

Sure they HAD it, but those acts could've done it without, as opposed to this years lineup.

Huh? You don't think any of this year's performers could've put on a good show without "fireworks" and massive numbers of backup dancers? I'm not a fan of any of them, but I disagree - I think Beyonce and Mars would do just fine with a minimal setup.

And as I stated in another post, I don't see what's wrong with choreographed dance moves anyway. Is James Brown now viewed as a phony because he didn't just "stand there and play"?

    Ya think?

Not sure why you think Mars and Beyonce would be terrible if they didn't have the support of other dancers - and I still don't understand why musicians who dance on stage is such a bad thing anyway...

Don't be dense, the obvious reason is because their music is "modern" and therefor it sucks. I personally think they're better at things like the Superbowl since performers is what they are first, musicians second.

I dunno, the allotted 10-15 minute slot would only get them through one verse and chorus of one song, so...

    Choreographed dance moves killed rock.

Then it died a langorous death because there were bands doing those routines as long as there's been rock.

Vocalists aren't musicians? When did this happen?

In any case, Santana always surprises me how important he thinks he is. Supposedly , Santana is the only band ever that played 'real' music. Whatever.

    Oatsdad, you are 100% correct!

Beyonce and Bruno could easily put on a fantastic show with a minimal setup, because they both can really sing, they aren't fake!

In fact they both have performed with a minimal setup, all that Etta James music that Beyonce did was the real thing.

Bruno performed with his family for years, they are both very seasoned performers and professionals!

Oh, and Bruno is definitely a musician, remember how he absolutely killed on the drums in his first SB appearance.

Wow..I didn't read that...where did he say that!?
Santana is always name checking musical greats in practically every interview he has ever given.
Even this latest he brings up others and even Stevie "Guitar" Miller.

    Via Diamond Dave...
