was playing: Sonny Rollins - Newk's Time 1957, Blue Note Records Toshiba/EMI Japan reissue now playing: Jack Wilson - Easterly Winds 1967, Blue Note Records original pressing
Thanx! It's a tasty DIPA for sure. They have a Triple IPA called Hi-Res, going to pick that up tomorrow. Fitting name eh?. Speaking of great beer and music there's a Portland based industry mag called Tape Op that focuses solely on analog recording, they also have a studio in PDX. They do a seasonal collaboration with a local brewery called Overdub IPA, check the graphics:
Thanks for your replys Lon. Yeah, he's a personal favorite of mine. In fact I need to dig out a cd or lp to p,ay next. Hmmm. NP Richard Williams - New Horn In Town (Barnaby)
I've been disatisfied with the jazz section of Amoeba's Berkeley for years now and I started going to Rasputin's i stead and found better quality/price ratios and cooler titles and I'm talking vinyl primarily but I always check out the cds too. Now Rasputin's has gone down hill so I can't imagine that Amoeba's has seen any upsurge. Supply and demand In action. That is expensive property so you need to make a certain amount per square foot or you're going to run into trouble if your other areas of the store can't cover. I haven't bought any music from Amoeba's in three or four years at least and I used to go there every other month or three. I would buy large too, go nuts.
Thanks! I just listened to my copy of Idle Moments and it is a very good sounding pressing. I am sorry to hear your copy is a bad one. Do you have problems on both sides? Have you contacted Music Matters for a replacement? I had a bad copy of Empyrean Isles and they sent me a replacement with my next order. This batch I just got in.
That and the Space Book in particular are holy grails for me. I have reissues but I'd love to have originals of all the original "Books" and I only have one. Booker is my man. He's been one of my favorite tenor players for a long time now. His ability to push his solos right up to the edge without really going outside is exciting to me. It's a balancing act when you play music that swings to keep the solos interesting without losing the song structure and Booker has that down imo. I've never heard a bad recording by him either.
NP Booker Ervin - Structurally Sound (Pacific Jazz) mono first pressing With Charles Tolliver and John Hicks! One of his top albums imo, in league with the "book" series.
NP Duke Pearson - Tender Feelin's (Blue Note) Classic Records mono reissue. This was my one bad experience with a CR reissue. Track one, side one has a tiny piece of what looks to me like vinyl sitting on the record surface and it isn't coming off. The rest of the album is flawless and the second track is a wonderful version of I'm A Fool To Want You. Not a bad place to start the album imo.
Pitiful, and in such a "hip" city . I can't find bupkis for good used vinyl, I guess we have more retired Hippies than Beats. Here's another sad story: Jazz Record Mart sale imminent »
I actually bought it from a shop here in Montreal, and at the time didn't know they'd allow me to exchange it. It took me by surprise as the rest of the series has been so stellar in regards to the pressing quality.
I saw that the other day. I didn't get a chance to stop in when I was in Chicago last May but I did manage to visit Dusty Groove. The only sure bet in the East Bay anymore is Groove Yard on College. Next time I go to Berkeley to pick up wine I will hot Groove Yard instead of Telegraph Ave. i've only continued going to A and R due to habit. It's time to change habits.
I agree Six String! I feel like he is making his Sax cry when he plays. Such a great sound. I think I am going to have an all Booker evening. Now spinning on the TT! Original Mono pressing on Prestige.
Yeah, I got a nasty Midnight Blue (Kenny Burrell) bought on subscription and they hooked me up. I only see things getting worse as pressing plants are pushed to their production limits and QC is ultimately suffering. A small indie who presses at RTI recently sent back 3 test pressings due to QC issues. Not good. The travails of mass popularity will ultimately take it's toll. My Idle Moments was fine though.
