Anyone else notice how similar "Martha" by the Jefferson Airplane sounds like "Mr. Webster" by the Monkees? Maybe not the exact same song but someone sure was inspired by the other one.

So Headquarters came out 6 months before After Bathing at Baxters, but I'm assuming "Martha" was played a lot in concert before it was recorded in the studio. Anyone know which song was written first?

This track reminds me of The Monkees' "What Am I Doin' Hangin' 'Round":

Well, both albums (Headquarters and Baxters) were recorded at RCA studios in Hollywood (not at the same time, of course).

I'm sure I've read that some people think Micky's vocal on Zor And Zam sounds a bit like Grace Slick.

Eric Lefcowitz said it in his Monkees book.

I must be honest...I know both tracks very well and and don't hear any correlation.

I don't hear any significant similarities between Mr. Webster and Martha, other than an acoustic guitar picking in each song. Melodies, arrangement all completely different.

I highly doubt Jefferson Airplane was listening to The Monkees in 1967.
