I've been listening to two terrific Grateful Dead cover albums - Deadicated from the early '90s on CD and streaming tracks from the upcoming Day of The Dead 5 CD compilation from 4AD. May will bring the Meet Up at the Movies and 21 new CDs of Grateful Dead/Grateful Dead material! 5/01 - Dave's Picks 18 (7/17/76) + bonus disc (4 CDs) 5/11 - Meet Up at the Movies (7/2/89) 5/13 - July 1978: The Complete Recordings (12 CDs) 5/20 - Day of the Dead (5 CDs)

Like Ducksdeluxe, I'm listening to the Fillmore April 71. 4/25 has a rare fast electric Friend Of The Devil, that I guess was too sloppy to include on Ladies & Gentlemen.

Oh yes! 3/8/80 comes to mind. Tops in my book, although there are plenty of killer versions from that era.
Starting today with a wonderful SBD from U.C.L.A., 11/25/79. A really great sounding early Brent show. Pauley Pavilion (UCLA), Los Angeles, CA (11/25/79) Jack Straw Tennessee Jed Me and My Uncle Big River Loser New Minglewood Blues Easy to Love You Althea Lost Sailor Saint of Circumstance Deal Shakedown Street Bertha Looks Like Rain He's Gone The Other One drums Truckin' Stella Blue Good Lovin' Johnny B. Goode This second set looks like it could be filled with some serious groove. So far I've yet to find a UCLA show I didn't like. And Dave's 5 from 73 is one of my all time favs. I recently recieved about 25 SBD and Matrix shows from 73-91 from a friend in CO. So after spending so much time listening to exclusively offical live releases I'm really enjoying my first dip into a lot of stuff I've only heard tales about. Last night I was up late listening to 6/25/91 from Bonner Springs, Kansas. Man I enjoyed that show. Wonderful Scarlet>Fire and just an overall well played and mixed show. Save for some weird vocal effects late in the 2nd set. For later tonight I'm going to jump forward to the Greek Theatre, 7/15/84. Hope everyone is having a wonderful Thursday and we are on the downhill run into the weekend! Enjoy the >jam
I'm listening to the '79 30 Trips show. I'm in the first set and the Bobby tunes are carrying the proceedings. Ooooo, sudden conversion to aud. tape during the Minglewood Brent solo. Finally some Hammond! Before that Brent is sticking to electric piano--the Plinkmaster 8000, I believe. Anyway, next time you listen to "Easy To Love You", imagine Michael McDonald singing it. It totally works. For me, anyway. OK, gotta pay attention to Jerry's "Stagger Lee"...
Three shows in and Vince's presence has apparently kickstarted the band again - the first two shows in Richfield were blazing and now the Philly run begins it's three nights with a SCORCHING Shakedown. Aww yes.
There is also an excellent audience recording of 25 Nov 1979 courtesy of Bob Menke. Hope you are staying "high and dry" Chuck!
That Dancing->Franklin's was one of the sequences I was most excited about when the box was announced. Always loved that second set, nice to have an official version...
4/25 also has the first of three set-two opening Morning Dews of this run, the most ragged, but with some intense moments in Jerry's closing solo. Funny to hear Sugar Mag with Jerry and Phil trying to sing harmony like on the studio version, a year or so before they reworked it as primarily a Bob and Donna feature. This was on L&G but I never noticed it.
9/10/90 - Philadelphia, PA Excellent set one bookended with two PHENOMENAL performances! The opening Shakedown was one for the ages. Almost New Year's '84 or Merriweather '85 or Chicago '91 (you get the idea). And this Foolish Heart... Holy crap!!! This might be the most explosive, fiery rendition ever! The band is just exploding and Jerry's solo is PERFECT.
I love not knowing a show, listening and being like "OK. Check. OK. Yup. OK." And then, at some point, lightbulb, "This is why the show made the box."
I still have no clue why that show was deemed better than the New Haven or Uniondale gigs. I mean, the Yarmouth gigs are great, but the others I mentioned totally blow them away, imo.
I still think they should do a Fall '79 box of like 5 or 6 shows like they did with May '77. That would be perfect.
Fall '79 June '76 July '85 Summer '91 All great periods that would be good choices for a "period" box
It had been for a while by the time I got the tape in 1994 (because of the Dancin' but probably also partly because it was one of the few fall 79 soundboards around then).
