I recently upgraded to a 50" Samsung 1080p LED TV and this thing really shines with my Blu-ray discs. Today I watched Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Interstellar and both movies made my jaw drop at how good it looked on this.

    What are your reference Blu-rays?

I've got quite a few but the most stunning has to be 2001 A Space Odyssey. Simply jaw dropping.

The Dark Knight looked incredible along with Aviator. The 1980 Flash Gordon, although not very good if you're not a fan, looked fantastic. I was surprised. Also, Hello Dolly, Watchmen, Starship Trooper, Birdman,Skyfall and not least, Barbarella.

I haven't watched it for awhile, but The Searchers was one of my first blurays that looked stunning.

Filed my blu-ray player up a high shelf after watchin' all those digital movies on BD. Even thinkin' of starting a website about blown out movie mastering.

I don't see many blown out Bluray discs......a lot of this is due to improper TV or Bluray player adjustment.

I'll make an example of one that truly bothers me...
    The dune.

DVD seems to look so much better and crisp than bluray. I had both copies.

Your Blu-ray players are going to upscale and enhance your DVDs to make them look more like Blu-rays. Maybe they just do a really good job.

I'll bet if you hooked up an old DVD-only player to your system, you wouldn't have the same opinion.

no matter how good a job the Bluray player upscales...I've never seen a better looking DVD than a bluray equivalent.

I've seen some. I play my movies on my PC, and my video renderer is madVR, which can do amazing things to SD material using the full power of your graphics card. Criterion has some excellent quality DVDs that look great on my system, and Blu-rays that are badly mastered (especially "classic" films) don't look as good.

For example, for several years the only BR version of The Third Man was the StudioCanal release. The Criterion DVD version looked better on my system than that BR. Now, of course, the Criterion Blu-ray (from a new restoration) blows away all previous versions, BR or DVD.

Of those displayed on my Oppo, "Avatar" was in class of its own (did not access 3D). From my own collection, and as an F1 fan, "Rush" is my favorite.
