Love them both and agree they are completely different artists. Not a fair comparison yet people have been trying to for years. Growing up I loved Michael but early 80's saw me become a diehard Prince fan that would last 30+ years.

I wish they were both still with us.

That's ok. In the outside world it's a different story. He's regarded as the greatest Pop artist of all time. Not sure if it's true but he's certainly the most popular. Us Prince fans always feel the need to put Michael Jackson down (myself included, in the outside world) because Prince is largely viewed by the general public as a poor man's Michael Jackson but we (music nerds) know that to be completely untrue and we also know who's the most talented of the two. (*cough cough* Prince) That still doesn't make it right to diss MJ just to big up Prince.

Michael proclaimed himself the King of Pop but we know who is the greatest pop artist/group of all time.

I don't know anyone who thinks Prince as a poor man's Michael Jackson.

If anyone does they don't anything about Prince then.

What are you on about? I never mentioned The Beatles in my comments or any comparison to Prince to The Beatles.

That's all you do man. I'm surprised you've lasted this long without mentioning them by name. All I'm saying is....

    Prince > The Beatles

Recognize the greatest and learn to...

I think Johnny needs to read before commenting.

I recognize Prince is great. However, you brought The Beatles into this not me. I have been very respectful towards Prince.

Well, Michael Jackson was great, but I find Prince more interesting overall. The variety and ambition in his work are just outstanding.

They are very different though - Jackson being more pop/soul and Prince more funk/rock.

 VH1? Really? That's a credible source? What's next? Rolling Stone magazine?

Well The Beatles are number one on that list also. The VH1 list was actually voted by a panel of musicians and producers.

However, my original comments was regarding your comment people thinking Prince as a poor's man Michael Jackson. Again, I have never heard that nor do I think anyone who knows music would feel that way.

I'd say that your average Joe thinks of MJ as good entertainer, an oddball, someone who sang some catchy tunes, and a guy that other people regard as a king of pop (although it goes without saying that hardcore MJ fans are included as the public, it's those who're the loudest about the whole 'king of pop' thing).

So when you said "we know who is the greatest pop artist/group of all time", you weren't referring to the Beatles? You bring them up in practically every thread, whether it's relevant or not. It like a kind of tunnel-vision.

I remember being very excited about MJ when Off The Wall (and Triumph) came out. I really thought that he had the potential to be a knew Marvin Gaye or Curtis Mayfield but he became something of a circus attraction.

"Michael's music is better. I would actually say it's unequivocally better. Because we can name more Michael songs than Prince songs."

That cool. Sometimes this forum gets so whacked it's hard to tell. Back to cherishing some Prince deep tracks...

Prince has elements of The Beatles, Dylan, Jimi Hendrix (obviously), James Brown and Bowie. The dude is just the ****!
