I'm surprised the Beatles posing with orchestral woodwind+brass instruments hasn't been included yet:

Given how much we've heard about Paul's womanizing ways, I think "girls" were his primary instrument!

 

Maybe because they're not playing the instruments?

Though that's not the first pic where someone poses with instruments but clearly doesn't play them...

There's a photo of Fairport that I saw years ago in some book, love to get a scan of it. Jerry Donahue, the guitar player, was out front singing lead, Richard Thompson was playing his guitar, but he wasn't in the band then, Sandy Denny was playing drums, Dave Pegg the bass was playing... mandolin? Great picture. If anybody's got it...

 

Not sure what year this is, and many probably already have heard this, but...
when the Beatles met Elvis in L.A. in '65, Elvis was doing just this. Playing a Fender bass in his living room.
The TV was on with no sound, and Mohair Sam was playing on the jukebox.

 

Yeah, it's actually a common thread in this... thread: non-drummers having a photo op behind the kit. I wonder why that is? Just for the convenience of it, as the only place to sit down in a studio? Or are these guys - from Lennon to Plant via Hendrix - actually frustrated drummers deep down?
