A fair amount, I heard her from the beginning, watched all the videos, bought some albums. She deserves her success, she is an entertainer, like 95% of the artists out there. But I say yea for the 5%, those who have a spiritual or special artistic dimension to their work. She doesn't have that for me, nor I believe in general music history terms. But a Springsteen does, say.

Also, we can't go by singing "ability" when assessing a Joplin, say. Look at Bob Dylan. Or Leonard Cohen. Actually he is a good example of someone in the 5% whom I never liked. But he qualifies. Neil Young too.

my favs are Madonna (self-titled), True Blue, Like A Prayer, Erotica. Ray of Light seems to be the forum favorite though, definitely give it a listen if you haven't already.

Personally, I don't think Madonna can hold a candle to Tony Orlando & Dawn.:D

That reminds me why I bought that album. Masterpiece is great and should have been a big hit. She can still knock out the odd great tune.

It's a really nice song, but people rarely mention it. It was a blissful moment after trudging through the rest of the rubbish on MDNA.

Boys, boys - we can hate Janis and Karen. It's an equal opportunity thread!

In truth, there's no such thing. Some are more consistently loved than others, but no one is loved by all.

I never cared for Janis. Don't like the vocals, don't like the style of music, etc. - just not my thing...

I'm presuming Janis never covered Beechwood 45789?

This is really just your opinion.

I guess Beethoven and Tchaikovsky don't count because they weren't from the 60s? o_Oo_Oo_O

Paul McCartney and Van Halen invented music. Before that, there was just noise.

Fortunately, being from the UK, Springsteen or Van Halen didn't get played too much. Dad rock at its worst imo.

When she did try to focus on her pop side with American Life (which I like), she was savaged beyond all recognition.

American Life's an underrated Madonna album imo.

Very much yay. I actually don't care very much about how she looks (though I've always liked the Madonna of "Borderline"). I really like the tunes: "Open Your Heart" most of all.

Really eh? Are the Sex Pistols dad's rock too? What about Live At Leeds? (That's The Who, if you're not sure).

One of the most ignorant things I've read on this board, in my opinion. There wouldn't be rock and pop as you know it, including Madonna, but for all the "dad's rock" of previous generations. And mom's rock, by the way.

What this silent film means I have no idea. Maybe the dads can tell me?

She was curvier back then. If we're talking 80's then the LAV era is the peak of her sexiness.

Dad rock definition: "rock music that appeals to an older generation, or that is heavily influenced by that of an earlier era."

On that basis, yes, The Who would be included. But not The Sex Pistols, they're punk.

I think you're getting a bit too offended there.
