Sorry if I'm missing something - so the Japan BD looks better than the US BD of Last Emperor?

Nope. Nor is there any news of utilizing the recently restored six track original mix that won the Oscar. (Like Ben-Hur and other classics that lose their original mix.)

Dunno. It's a relatively small difference. The last paragraph does quote the producer as saying they hoped all of the release prints would have been 70mm, and they considered that in the film's composition.

well the films DP (Storaro) was pushing his own film format which is 2.0 (or something I forgot) so he reformated AN and Last Emperor
at least the AN finally came out in 2.35:1 and thanks to a Japanese Import (which is region A Like US titles) we now have it in 2:35;1 the way it was shot
while some of Criterion's special features are also included ,some are only on the Criterion Disc

Looks like the Criterion edition still uses the edited 160 min edited version.
The Japan blu-ray uses the 218 min version.

Is the Criterion that much better looking than the Japan?
If not, I'm still going for the 2012 Japan blu-ray.

I would highly recommend all of the Criterion Chaplin releases. The Kid is the oldest of them so far and in my opinion looks the best. City Lights is excellent too.

The Sound of Music is also great for something a bit newer.

DP Vittorio Storaro was insistent for some reason that some versions of the home video transfer be done at 2.00:1. Don't ask me why -- it's his creative choice.

He thought it was the compromise that worked best for both theatrical and TV screenings:
