One of these days, folks will realise just what a fantastic album this is.

It's the new remix but mastering is superior to the CD versions. It has more bass than the original vinyl but think it is a matter of taste which is prefered. It's not a sonic wonder nor a bad recording. This is the album that belatedly got me into genesis in 1978 due to the inclusion of 'Follow You, Follow Me'. It's still a proper prog album otherwise.

I think it's a fantastic album, considering the circumstances surrounding it. I saw this tour and the one before it so this holds a special place in my heart. I love all Genesis albums up to perhaps Abacab, but I am even more impressed today with this album than I was then. Down and Out, Undertow, Burning Rope are top notch tracks.

I certainly do. I'm currently in love with Undertow. There's something about this song, really everything about it - the lyrics are extremely moving, the chord changes in the chorus are just so majestic and work perfectly to bring out the emotion in the lyric. Great vocal from Phil, too. This song never fails to raise goosebumps when played at realistic volume on a full range system.

"Snowbound" is also terrible. It sounds perfectly nice until the drums come in on the chorus and then the complete lack of subtlety in the mix means they punch you in the face instead of nicely underpinning the rest of the track.

I think it's a thin mix, lacking bottom end.

I have a soft spot for this album, but it took me years to get into and appreciate this album

Still wondering about the Japanese version that's amazing. Would love to know which vinyl/CD I'm looking for. The original US pressing is good but I still think it sounds kinda ass it places any time things get loud.

Regarding Japanese CDs grab one of these, excellent sounding discs:

An original UK (pink mad hatter) is cheap to buy (in UK). I still think most people will enjoy the remix on vinyl, though it sounds a little compressed and less open but better bottom end.

The 'Purple Swirl' seems to be the most expensive way to obtain this album. Genesis - ... And Then There Were Three... »

Has anyone compared the sound of this disc to the other unremastered CDs? I'm guessing that its value is due to it being rare, rather than a dramatic increase in sound quality?

Same matrix as the first WG target. None of the WG targets sound different, so the mastering isn't unique.

Yes, this CD sounds exactly the same as Atlantic Target CD and Yellow Swirl Charisma disc with the following matrix numbers "800059 2 01".

P.S. There is one more variation of this "Purple Swirl" disc that is less common and I believe share the same mastering.

Thanks. I have a WG Blue Face, which I think is the same mastering as the WG Target. I also have a V/C Nimbus. So looks like I just need to pick up a Japanese to have all the original masterings.

I assume all the Japanese CDs share the same mastering? Does the 1999 release not use the 'DE' mastering?

TOCP-53069 I sourced from "CDSCDX 4010" so it's definitely "DE" mastering.

Thanks. I already have a UK "DE", as well as the '07 remix. I'll try and get one of those Japan Charisma discs that you recommend.

I can post a sample of any of those mentioned Japanese CDs, if you like?

Thanks for the offer, a sample of the 1991 release would be great.

VJCP-23120 share VJD-102 mastering, no difference at all. Haven't tested 32VD's.

Great choice of sample tracks! I will give it a listen this evening.

The 32VD-1015 and VJD-28089 have exactly the same peak levels as the one you just posted: Genesis - early CD versions thread (Ver. 2) »

OK, so It looks like all the Japanese CDs of "ATTWT" are sourced from the same master. Let me know if you need anything else.
