On the deluxe edition of Jeff Beck's 'Emotion & Commotion' is a DVD of most of his set from 2007 at Clapton's Crossroads Guitar fest. I must have watched this over 100 times and I still get a charge out of it. It's a tremendously talented band firing on all cylinders and playing together.

    Another one of my favorites:

    NIRVANA Loud and Live

The unexpurgated Pier 48 show from December 13, 1993, is a thing of true beauty, featuring a rollicking "About a Girl" (plus most of the stellar In Utero rave-ups) and their sensational, fully plugged-in recital of Bowie's classic "The Man Who Sold the World."

And just when you thought the producers of the DVD couldn't possibly top the aforementioned Seattle concert, they so graciously decided to include some bonus material that virtually eclipsed all that preceded it: a three-song set filmed in Paris on February 4, 1994.

This French television appearance, in my estimation, represents the finest qualities and very essence of Nirvana and, perhaps, Rock music in general...

    The
band comes out nattily-attired in suits 'though Pat Smear goes sans shoes throughout, they play in beastly fashion and for their last number, "Drain You," Kurt abandons his guitar and completely embodies the lead-singing frontman role while Pat continues to demolish on the six-string.

For live performance, the Loud and Live DVD is likely the best document of Nirvana you'll ever encounter.

Please excuse me while I recite a very personal memory closely related to this Harrison tribute DVD selection.

Five years ago, we knew our dog, Ki Ki (a miniature American Eskimo) --- 13 years old --- wasn't in the best of health but we hadn't had a proper diagnosis yet. Local vet visits yielded no concrete answer for what ailed her. Steroids were prescribed.

We tried those but she went for half a week without eating anything at all.

Long story made short, she ended up in an entirely immobile state on her final day on Earth --- stationary only on that ONE particular day, thank God! --- and my wife lovingly carried her to a recommended specialist who informed us that it was inoperable cancer that had filled her stomach with blood  and robbed her of her hunger....

Prior to that devastating diagnosis --- on the night before --- I took refuge in the basement and sought solace in playing the Concert for George DVD.

Just for the record, I think many tribute/memorial affairs fall far short of the musical genius that inspired them in the first place.

The Harrison tribute concert and subsequent DVD is vastly different.

Ki Ki usually ran away from music, barely tolerated it.

And yet --- on her last full day --- she descended the stairs (an act she NEVER did) to join us in our appreciation of George's masterful music.

She stayed with us, resting on the floor beside us, for the entire playback.

When the music finished, she climbed the stairs with us, on the way to bed.

On the next day, she ascended an even greater stairway....

Thank you ever so much, George.

And if you've seen our Ki Ki, I hope you've given her a pet from us, as she loves you, too.

(We all love you, you know.)
