I have a real soft spot for 1980's animation- the output of Hanna-Barbera, DIC, Filmation, Ruby-Spears... I like (almost) all of it save for Transformers and G.i Joe which I wasn't into at the time (when I was the right age) and still don't like now. :)

Not just the animated series and films of the era, but the animation style itself. It looks brighter and crisper than a lot of the 1970's era stuff, but not as sleek as a lot of the 1990's cartoons.

So, I thought I'd start a discussion thread about 80's cartoons/TV shows/movies. :) What are some of your favorites?

Here's a list on TV Tropes

Western Animation of the 1980s - TV Tropes »

The Filmation stuff doesn't look very good, but then again it never did... but a lot of the Ruby-Spears and Hanna-Barbera output still looks pretty good to me.

  5. Let's see, I've got DVD's of Duck Tales, Jem And The Holograms, Inspector Gadget, He-Man/She-Ra, Voltron, Astro Boy, The Mysterious Cities Of Gold, Rainbow Brite, Danger Mouse, Count Duckula and maybe more but I can never remember everything I have because I have so much. Is Captain Planet 80's or 90's?

  9. And how could I forget "David The Gnome"? (American title "The World Of David The Gnome")

The last episode..... .....I almost need a tissue just thinking about it and I have not watched it since 1989!

I really enjoy the '80s Don Bluth films since that was his golden period, Transformers, The Last Unicorn, Heavy Metal, Akira, Rock & Rule, and the Miyazaki films from that decade just to name a few.

So many great animated features from that decade: The Plague Dogs, Twice Upon a Time, Chronopolis, Son of the White Mare (MIND-BLOWING Hungarian film), The Black Cauldron, When the Wind blows, Robot Carnival, Grave of the Fireflies (all of Ghibli's films!), etc.

I was really into "Battle Of The Planets" and "Star Blazers", before they weren't on anymore. Then I turned to "Transformers", "Voltron", and "GI Joe". Never was a big "Thundercats" guy.

Dungeons And Dragons was my favorite out of all of those. I was devastated when it went off the air.

I had forgotten about Silverhawks until I was looking around on Youtube and stumbled upon it. It had that cowboy dude that played guitar! And kind of a catchy theme song.

I loved D & D. The entire series is on DVD for cheap. Tragically, the writers penned the final episode which would take the kids home, but it was never filmed. So sadly, those poor kids are still stuck in the land of Dungeons & Dragons.

I know, I read it online somewhere. I think one of the original writers put it up.

I think they have done an audio version of the screenplay. It MIGHT be on the DVD. Can't remember where I read about it.

I really liked the Disney afternoon shows, my favourite of which was Ducktales, but there was also Talespin, Darkwing Duck and Rescue Rangers. I bought Ducktales when it appeared on DVD in the early 2000s.
