Great tune; what artists does it critisize though?

Neil Young "Walk On" I thought this was his walking away from the Skynyrd song feud. But I smoke a lot of weed so yeah.

Funkadelic - In "Let's take it to the stage" Bootsy calls out "Hey Kool & the Gang, let's get it on. Let's take it to the stage" I think they call out some other groups too but the groove is too funky I lost myself.

    I'm funk and I'm proud.

I remember an interview where the guitarist for Winger was straight up trash talking Kirk Hammett.

    Really, it fits Sting perfectly.
The Jamaican singing stle, eco-warrior stuff, bad acting

Not really familiar with Nail, loved him as Oz but couldn't abide his musical output. He did keep his geordie accent though didn't he.

This Corrosion by The Sisters of Mercy. Written about Wayne Hussey, ex guitar player from the Sisters and front man from The Mission.
So many great references and phrases right through it.

Hussey famously reviewed it for Melody maker without realising that it was about him.

I thought "Walk On" was referring to Jack Nitzsche and Carrie Snodgress? I can't remember where I read that. In "Shakey" maybe?

I say it's about Jimmy Nail, because virtually everyone who's ever encountered him has a nasty story to tell: plus, he's known as an actor rather than as a musician, whereas with Sting it's the other way round. Also - people who have encountered Sting don't seem to have found him obnoxious, whether fellow musos or ordinary punters.

RT should have expected that most people, internationally, would think it was about Sting, though.

Not at Springsteen himself but at someone who 'claims' to know him and his sax player.

When the album was released, RT was asked (a lot) about this song and replied that it was about 'a really obnoxious Geordie' that he'd met somewhere on his travels. He wouldn't go further than that, other than to deny it was about Sting.

Nail's egomania is well-documented and is given as a reason for the current becalmed state of his career: he upset so many people when he was riding high that there was no one to help him when he had a few flops.

I am happy to be told I am wrong, but Lou Reed wrote "Strawman" on his New York album.

"Does anybody need another self-righteous rock singer
Whose nose he says has led him straight to God?"

I always took this as a reference to Bob Dylan re his religious trilogy.

And Smashing Pumpkins. But I don't know if either mention is really Malkmus 'criticising' them, or just poking fun and/or satirising the typical Pumpkins/STP fan.

Out on tour with the Smashing Pumpkins
Nature kids, I/they don't have no function
I don't understand what they mean
    And I could really give a f***
    The Stone Temple Pilots,
    They're elegant bachelors
    They're foxy to me
    Are they foxy to you?
    I will agree
    There isn't absolutely nothing
    Nothing more than me
    Dreamin' dream dream dream

Still, it's a verse I've always loved (although the second verse, "Out on my skateboard..." etc, is my favourite Malkmus verse ever).

"Peanuts" from "Outlandos D'Amour", the debut album of The Police
Sting attacking what Rod Stewart had turned out to be.

I always smile when I listen to that song -- considering how they recorded that crap Three Musketeers song together, and how Sting has pretty much become everything he criticized in Rod Stewart (and more).

I always found these lyrics a bit unfair, really. But still, what a fantastic song!

Both the Boss and Paddy McAloon are two of my favorite songwriters.

I like that, it never occurred to me before. I always thought that line was more generic referring to the classic stereotype of the reformed coke head rock star who became spiritual in rehab.

    One of my favourite albums.

"Takeover" by Jay-Z is brutal and great.

"Tweeter and the Monkey Man" by Wilburys/Dylan if gentle/playful criticism is your thing.

    About L. Ron Hubbard
He was an artist, just not a musical artist

He had a lot to say.
He had a lot of nothing to say.
    We'll miss him. [2x]

    We're gonna miss him. [2x]

    Yeah, so long.
    We wish you well.
Told us how you weren't afraid to die.
    Well, so long.
    Don't cry, yeah,
    Or feel too down.
    Not all martyrs see divinity.
    But at least you tried.

    Standing above the crowd,
He had a voice that was strong and loud.
    We'll miss him.
    We'll miss him.
    Ranting and pointing his finger
    At everything but his heart.
    We'll miss him.
    We'll miss him.

    We're gonna miss him. [2x]

Yeah, no way, yeah, to recall
What it was that you had said to me,
    Like I care at all.

    But it was so loud.
    You sure could yell.
Took a stand on every little thing
    And so loud.

    Yeah, standing above the crowd,
He had a voice that was strong and loud and I
Swallowed his facade 'cause I'm so
    Eager to identify with
    Someone above the ground,
Someone who seemed to feel the same,
Someone prepared to lead the way, and
Someone who would die for me.

    Will you? Will you now?
    Would you die for me?
    Don't you ****ing lie.

Don't you step out of line.
Don't you step out of line.
Don't you step out of line.
    Don't you ****ing lie.

You claimed all this time that you would die for me.
Why then are you so surprised when you hear your own eulogy?

He had a lot to say. [2x]
He had a lot of nothing to say. [2x]

    Come down.
    Get off your ****ing cross.
We need the ****ing space to nail the next fool martyr.

    To ascend you must die.
    You must be crucified
For our sins and our lies. [sic]
    Goodbye...
