Now confirmed, Chris Berman leaving ESPN's NFL gigs after 2016...

Admittedly not one of my favorites, but gets a lot more criticism than he deserves...good luck to him.

Perhaps, but a groundbreaker in his day...helped draw folks to ESPN and get it off the ground.

It's the 'retiring' part that's being denied...note how no one is denying the (more recent) SI story about him leaving the NFL shows.

 

His voice will go out eight seconds into his retirement speech.

 

Like him or hate him, ESPN's NFL coverage won't be the same without him.

 

Regarding his fandom, I really think it's age dependent. Bask in my high school/college days (80's), I loved him. Enjoyed hearing his nicknames for baseball players during the highlights. Two that come to mind are Bert (Be Home) Blyleven, and Tom (Leave It To) Seaver.

As I got older, I hated his football highlights and his home run derby work. Not sure he changed, but I either grew tired of it, or he became a caricature of himself.

He is a legend though. ESPN was a mere babe when he joined.

 

The guy is a freaking legend in sports broadcasting... I am super surprised by all the dislike for him... Things will not be the same no doubt

 

Just don't put Tony Kornheiser on Sunday NFL Countdown - I'd rather have a bullet in my head.

 

Yeah, and that's a good thing. I cannot stand the guy. A bloated douche in a suit. His schtick got old ten years ago.

 

Read the INSIDE ESPN Book....you might not think he's such a wonderful person.

 

Never peak behind the curtain - it only leads to disappointment.

Seriously? You weren't aware that millions of people can't stand Berman? I'm super surprised that anybody likes him. I stopped watching the annual baseball All-Star Home Run Derby because of him.

 

But the typo made it extra funny!

Howard Cosell was hated in his final years, although Berman is not nearly as deep.

There are people who still hate Brent Musburger.

 

I think the shine has worn off that one. They thought he was the second coming until his true colors showed through and he embarrassed them. But yea, if they put that anus on the countdown, you can bet I'm not watching ever again.

 

Long overdue. The nickname gimmick was stale in 1990. Please tell me he'll also never announce baseball games again. Absolutely brutal.

The bloom is seriously off the ESPN rose. Somebody please take that network out behind the barn and get it over with.
