Cowboy Copas, killed with Patsy Cline in 1963, now totally forgotten. That bugs me, he was great!

Thanks to video tape, we can watch old country stars in the context of those times. Cowboy Copas was really a great picker and (I hear) a truly nice guy, almost totally forgotten today. Introduced by T. Tommy, a year before the plane crash.

    Take a look.

I didn't realize until just the other day that the pilot of the plane - Randy Hughes - was his son-in-law and Patsy's manager.

I mean he wasn't Tony Rice but his playing is charming.

Good point. Patsy was enjoying broad success and was almost transcending the genre. Country wasn't as mainstream as Rock n Roll so the guys who died with Buddy Holly always seemed to be remembered, even the J.P. Richardson (Big Bopper) who wasn't known by most to be as musically inclined as he was.

These things are quicksand. I have to watch myself--I could end up spending the day just looking at Country performances of that era. It's so magnetic and refreshing to see such unadorned talent on display. I often find myself thinking, now there's a person in front of an audience because they uncontestedly belong in front of one.

Those were great. The flat picking was excellent and he played with a lot of skill and charm. You can hear that he influenced Doc Watson.

The second one was in a different style but also a winner. I also loved the little cameo by who I believe was a young June Carter.

    Thanks.

If you don't have the Complete Hit Singles A's and B's 2 CD set on Real Gone Music, this is a must have collection, only the hit versions. There is a 24 Greatest Hits cassette collection which contains a lot of the Starday remakes of the King songs but the Real Gone collection is the essential collection and contains the versions that were hits to begin with.

    Cowboy Copas - Complete Hit Singles A's & B's - Amazon.com Music »

There are Gospel CD collections of Cowboy Copas as well: Amazon.com: Cowboy Copas Gospel: CDs & Vinyl »

The most thorough single disc greatest hits is Copas Cowboy - 20 All-Time Greatest Hits - Amazon.com Music » but the Real Gone collection is still what I'd recommend.

BTW, TeeVee is a Gusto Records imprint that was originally used for As Seen on TV comps but these comps are sold in bargain bins.

Just more proof that country (real country) was the other American art form.

Steve, very unusual irony. Yesterday, I acquired a New Old Stock original Starday 45 of "Alabam", it was ex Lawrence Record Shop in Nashville stock, which was picked up by a favorite honey hole of mine with a location one hour's drive away. Along with this one I got the Starday Jukebox EP of Red Sovine's "Giddy-Up Go" new old stock, and got a new old Stock copy of "4 By Buck Owens" and a Decca Wilburn Brothers EP with "Which One Of Us Is To Blame" Spent around $18 on 45 singles and EP discs.

So many greats are forgotten. CC was awesome. Another is Patsy Montana. Check out her yodeling in the public domain movie I'm From Arkansas. She's fantastic!!!

I met Patsy when I was working after school at KLAC. She was great, she must have been 200 years old at that point!

Patsy's daughter gave me a ton of amazing photos of her Mom for the Encyclopedia of Arkansas History & Culture, for which I am the media editor. That whole family is awesome.
