"It's not a democracy," he said. "Barbara Broccoli (producer) decides who is going to be the next Bond, end of story."

    To be honest,
They really have no idea what they're doing.

The big hurdles with the studios, the endless litigation and rights difficulties in addition to being tied to MGM from Saltzman's shares being given to UA...all these are full time jobs, and both producers are really to be commended on staying true to the series...on that front.

The writing is atrocious, and nothing really works. People need to realize it isn't so much the lead actor but the key production team that really matters. That's what made the original films magical and why they gradually lost steam over the years: because people eventually left or retired or passed away.

Cubby Broccoli fought against the reboot idea for years as he felt audiences wouldn't be served very well by a new Bond who was incomplete and still learning. And you know, I think he was absolutely right. Fleming has Bond as a fully fledged character in CASINO ROYALE who merely is younger and perhaps a touch greener. He is the same man and only grows throughout the novels.

The biggest losses were Peter Hunt, without whom the films lost their energy and excitement and especially Richard Maibaum who practically was the brain behind the entire series. I adore the first sixteen films more than most anything in the world, and by the close of LTK most of the last vestiges of the series are gone.

A great film can be made but they need to take stock and actually believe in the character again. Yes the Cold War is over, but 007 is still relevant and can return to the proper Young-Hamilton balancing act without having to ape every modern cinematic trend. Even in the 70's when they aped many hot trends such as blaxploitation, martial arts and sci-fi-the character was never lost sight of: even in the most silly bits in Moonraker.

If they want to incorporate more Fleming, great. If they want Goldfinger 2, great. The films and novels are deprecate things that converge at times. But you can't go off the deep end and jettison the character himself in exchange for temporary success.

I haven't seen a Bond flick since the Roger Moore era (I've never really cared for spy flicks), but I do agree with your analysis. And while the Cold War may be over, it's making a comeback of sorts lately with overlord Putin's recent machinations. In a similar vein, there is plenty of story fodder to be had with China's expansionist ambitions in the South China sea and the wider Pacific, etc (we can leave the Middle East mess to Homeland :))

Mel Gibson was considering it once. But, it would have to be set in the 1960s.

..more silly casting ideas: the studios should sign Josh Hutcherson, Elijah Wood, Seth Green, Tom Cruise, Joe Pesci, Ben Kingsley and Peter Dinklage to star in a Harlem Globetrotters biopic...you know, it's time! :D ;)

Finally watched Spectre today. Very bad. Better than Quantum but much worse than Skyfall. They get Chris Waltz playing Bloffeld and end up with one of the most unimpressive villains ever whose motivation is highly unclear. They rebooted the franchise so well with Casino, and the only worthy follow up was Skyfall. Such a pity.

CS & QOS are really a pt 1&2 film.
I can live with them. But, Skyfall and Spector are duds.

Sounds good, but with the Asian market becoming ever more important to the bottom line, would this actually happen?

    Asian market?
    Big demand for 3D.
Another first for the James Bond movies.
